-=> Quoting Alexander Koryagin to Peter Coggon <=-

AK> Hi, PETER COGGON! How are you?

Not too bad, and right now is a great sunset over a calm lake.

ref
AK>> A special diet against mosquitoes?! Very cool! May be you share a
AK>> recipe? Although I heard that people of countryside are bitten by
AK>> mosquitoes more rare than town-dwellers. There is something that
AK>> countrymen could secrete instinctively. ;) So indeed very often we
AK>> can see that when two men fishing the mosquitoes can say who is a
 AK>> townsman.

PC> Alexander. I have not yet found the things to eat to keep the
PC> mosquitoes away. I am in contact with someone who does know, but as
PC> yet he has not got back to me on the subject. I need it as we're
PC> going camping in North Ontario soon .... yikes... :(

AK> I heard that some people like to use repellent liquids not only
AK> against mosquitoes. They could smell at it and be very high.

We have something like that here call "Deep Woods". Only big down
-side is that it is horrible smell, and it can destroy certain
materials if it happens to get on them. Destroyed some leather I
had, so I banned it from the boat and the RV.

 AR>It seems
AK> to me that is a variant. The second one is to smoke tobacco and smell
AK> of it. It is possible to become saturated with the tobacco at such
AK> extent that even people will run away from you. ;) It depends on
AK> cigarette type. The French Gitanes imho is perfectly fitting against
AK> mosquitoes. I tried to smoke it when I lived in France for some time.
 AK> ;-)

My dad used to smoke but not I. Not for the bugs either. I have
noticed that raw onions and garlic keep them away, as the black flys
are here, and some mosquitoes. Then too are the swallows and thrushes
that eat them in flight. All for the birds.

AK>> May be it is true another guess, that mosquitoes had bitten countrymen
AK>> so often that they understand when countrymen say the sacramental
AK>> phrase of Mowgli: "We be of one blood, ye and I". ;=))

PC> At the camping area, the lady there used to ride the grass cutter
PC> and the flying teeth never bothered her.
AK> They grind them out? ;)

Ha ha ... maybe. I always say whatever you wear in the forest the
mosquitoes will come anyhow, as it is the only smell not of the forest
so they fly about waiting for the stuff to wear off so they can dine
on your blood.

AK> Imho Russian fishermen like Russian scientists also like rather
AK> process than result. ;) For example to drink something.

  Vodka?

AK> Yes, I see. BTW is the water temperature of the lake allows to be
 AK> capsized?

Yes. Lake Simcoe is swallow enough to allow for the afternoon, jump
in the lake when becalmed out there somewhere ... Just remember before
the jump to have the ladder deployed so you can get back onboard.

AK> How much does it cost to go through that canal? Is it for free?

Not for free ... Most buy seasonal passes for the boating season,
and better to take a holiday and do the whole canal system ending
either Ottawa, Toronto or somewhere else.

AK> I always wonder when I see a big lake with fresh water and not a
AK> single river is flowing out of it. Probably it has some underground
 AK> water drain.

They all have rivers. Which lake are you referring to?

AK> Wow! What a marvellous sight it ought to be. When I was a boy, the
AK> power station in my town was powered by the burning of peat taken from
 AK> the local peat bogs.

We had peat bogs in England too. I also remember the same stuff as
you, and as well burning peat, and coal. Many a cold morning in Scotland
huddled around on a winter morning to get the coal fireplace going. A
source of heat, no central heating like the spoiled north americans.

AK> Where was a wide net of the local railways to
AK> supply a peat right to the power station. Two nice small steam trains
AK> also were alive in those days. But when the power station began be
AK> powered by natural gas everything was changed. The repairing of
AK> railways became unnecessary, railway sleepers gradually had rotted. The
AK> steams trains had been scrapped. What a pity!

Yes. Fired boilers also were a insurance problem too as they started
many fires when the trains went by. But I really like riding the
old steam train we have here, even if it only goes a few miles in
a circle. Yes...I big pity. They call it progress.

AK> Of course! What an awful language! It seem to me I can recognise the
AK> Frenchmen why their mutilated mouths (else they cannot pronounce
AK> French words properly). Poor people! ;-)

They also have words ending in "ent" and never say them ... ???? But
they are also afraid their language is fading, and might be one day
another forgotten tongue.

One of these days, I will have to upload pictures of the lake here
to the BBS, or attach to the message so you can see what I see and
love so much. But then I also love and miss our home in Brasil.

Regards to you and your family Alexander... Great chatting with
you via these messages.

  Peter
