========================
Hi, Alexander! Recently you wrote in a message to Ardith Hinton:

AH> see all the kludge lines. I toggle them on & off sometimes... but as a
AH> co-moderator I do need to be able to read them, and I see there are
AH> eight kludge lines at the beginning of your message. :-))

ak> It is a piece of cake. When your letter reaches me it has 22 kludge
ak> lines.

          Gosh. On our system, it has three or four. O wad some pow'r the
giftie gie us, tae see ourselves as others see us.

ak> My newsmailer has the special button (Headers) and I can see all of
ak> them if I want, but the text editor area contains only a message
ak> text.

AK>> You are buying software programs at full price, so of
AK>> course, if they work well, you will not spend money to
AK>>  buy new software.

AH> That may be one factor. Another is that an old DOS machine
AH> will run for months with no problems whatsoever, where Windoze
AH> (deliberate misspelling) causes all sorts of grief. If the old machine
AH> is reliable & still does a good job with processing Fidonet mail...
AH> hey, I'd leave well enough alone too. :-)

ak> But a presence the old machine does not stop from buying a new one.

          Agreed. Our first computer cost more than a month's salary & did a
lot less than modern computers do for less money. In those days we had *one*
computer, and Dallas would get upset if I tied it up for too long because his
BBS users might want it... at which point I'd remind him that he who pays the
piper calls the tune. Now I have my own computer & can take my time.... ;-)

ak> For example (besides Fido) it is not bad to have an ability to
ak> listen to the mp3 music on your computer. And in this case you have
ak> to have a quite new, large hard drive which hardly could be
ak> installed on the old motherboard. Besides it is nice to have USB
ak> interface (desirably USB2). For instance, I am carrying in my pocket
ak> an USB mobile hard drive, with capacity 120 gb. It is worth it to
ak> buy a new computer. And when you buy it you find it easier to have
ak> all the other information in one place; and finally you don't know
ak> what you have to do with your old wheelbarrow. ;)
ak> But you can have of course a special situation when your child is
ak> occupying the new computer for his games and you have to spend your
ak> time in the garage with your old MSDOS friend. ;=)

AK>> If we compare the live in an small echo with a campfire,
AK>> we can say that every letter is as a small twig for it.

AH> Ah... but the twigs are like kindling. If you want the fire
AH> to keep burning for a long time, you may need some bigger pieces as
AH> well... [chuckle].

ak> But in fact, it is as is in real life; the burning time of the fire
ak> with a big flame is not longer than the time of the small fire. All
ak> the wood of big fire burns very quickly. And all the spectators is
ak> moving away.

AK>> It depends on the size of the echo traffic. If it is a
AK>> small one, and in general you have nothing else to read,
AK>> then, of course, you have time to dive into the reading
AK>>  of long messages.

AH> This echo is about the right size for me! A (now defunct)
AH> echo had, for awhile, quite a bit of traffic. In a single day I saw
AH> ninety-five replies from the same individual.

ak> Better, let it be a defunct one. ;) Although it is difficult to
ak> flood the echo with a clear subject and purpose.

AH> He'd already mentioned that he allowed himself just one hour of on-line
AH> time daily...

ak> ;-) A record for the Guinness book.

AK>> the suspension mark without putting the full stop after
AK>> it. From one side it is quite logical - the suspension

AH> Traditionally the ellipsis [...] is used in a quoted passage
AH> to show that something has been omitted. But if something has been
AH> omitted at the end of a sentence, the sentence needs end punctuation in
AH> addition to the ellipsis.

AH> Many people in Fidonet also use a series of dots to indicate
AH> a pause
AH> ... just as I'm doing here. In some cases, it's a holdover from the
AH> days when computers would drop the connection & lose what folks had
AH> written if they took too long to think without engaging the keyboard.
AH> In my case, I suppose it's a holdover from high school days. I had an
AH> English teacher who didn't allow her students to use dashes.

ak> I read a funny story about Winston Churhchill; he wrote an important
ak> speech and gave it to the secretary to type. But the secretary was
ak> too smart, and he knew that it is bad Englishman to end the
ak> sentences with a preposition. So he changed a lot of the sentences
ak> in that speech. But Churchill marked them in red ink and said
ak> remarkable sentence:
ak> "This is the sort of English up with which I will not put." ;)

AH> Another reason, especially at the end of a paragraph, is that I have
AH> more to say on the subject & I'd welcome further input.... :-)

ak> Is it admit to use ellipsis when I want to increase the volume of
ak> the place where events are taking place? I want you to see a certain
ak> romantic tinge in the description.

ak> =========Beginning of the citation==============
ak> The lights moved overhead, the lights moved underneath.
ak> Everywhere.... =========The end of the citation================

ak> Or in this case:
ak> =========Beginning of the citation==============
ak> the driver found the home they searched, stopped by the
ak> wicket-gate, pulled out the luggage from the car and said:
ak> "Here we are. Good luck...."

ak> =========The end of the citation================
ak> In this passage I want you to see that the events will have some
ak> pause. I give you some sense of time. And then I continue:

ak> =========Beginning of the citation==============
ak> The owner of the house appeared to be an old man... etc
ak> =========The end of the citation================

ak> [...Nil de nihito fil]
ak> Bye Ardith!
