Ärende: Names (was Startrek)
============================
Aleksej R. Serdyukov wrote in a message to Everett Hertenstein:

EH> "Eve" is a feminine name. The only people I know who use it for me
EH> are the people who handle appointment schedules in my doctor's office.
EH> Their computer doesn't have enough space on the "Name" line so I end
EH> up as Hertenstein, Eve. Then when someone from the office calls me to
EH> verify an appointment, they ask for Mrs. Hertenstein and we go through
EH> this little thing: Me: There is no Mrs. Hertenstein. Caller: Uh, it
EH> says, "Eve Hertenstein" Me: Your computer can't handle Everett. Then
EH> we get into apologies and waste time. Of course, the same thing
EH> happens again next time I have an appointment.

ARS> Can they change it to "Hertenstein, E."?

Heavens, no! That wouldn't be enough assurance that they had the right person.
They might accept E.G., but I don't plan to cater to them.

AAnd lest you ask what would they do if a person only had one given name, I'll
tell you. You do it like this: George NMI Doaks. NMI is "No Middle Initial".
ARS> Once I had to get a credit card.
ARS> I came to the place. They registered me in their database. They
 ARS> missed the patronymic.
ARS> When I had came later, they couldn't find the record, because they
ARS> did use patronymic this time. So they added a new record. I said
ARS> that they may have skipped the patronymic before; they checked and
ARS> saw it was true. But they didn't do anything about it.
ARS> A month later I got the card.
 ARS> ...
ARS> Some months later they called and asked me to get my card, because
ARS> of the wrong record. Fortunately (Is the word correct? I had been
ARS> thinking "unfortunally" is its antonym, but this dictionary has
 ARS> "unfortunately" instead of it.

You were thinking incorrectly. Fortunately or unfortunately are both good
words and your use was correct.

 ARS> The dictionary contains errors,
ARS> though.), they did believe me about their mistake. ;)

ARS>> The whole name looks fine. :) I hope you had no problems with
ARS>> _it_ (because of rarity, if any, etc)?

EH> The name is rare. During my three years in the WWII Army I never
EH> encountered another person with the name Everett. In fact, I've only
EH> "met" one other person (other than my father) with that name. This
EH> was in a restaurant last year when, purely by chance, I overheard a
EH> man at a nearby table addressed as "Everett". I couldn't resist going
EH> over and introducing myself.

ARS> :-) Did he ever "met" other people with the name before? ;-)

No. He was as surprised as I was. It really is a rare name.

The thing that interests me, now that it's way too late to ask anyone who knew,
is how my grandmother happened to select that name. My grandfather didn't know.
Dad's mother had an extended illness before she died when he was twelve years
old. Apparently there was very little discussion of such unnecessary
information as etiology of names.
