Jim, thanks for posting this. Very interesting.
If a cultural relativist is someone who denies that his own culture
is objectively superior or singularly blessed, then we can define
a "taxonomic relativist" as someone who makes equivalent denials
regarding his own taxon.
Up until now I have been a card-carrying taxonomic relativist. This
study shakes my faith, but does not yet overthrow it. Some words of
caution in interpreting this:
First, it has been known for some time that human brain-size evolution
has been unusually rapid. This study merely suggests that the genetics
has evolved as rapidly as the morphology. Not all that surprising.
Furthermore, unusually rapid evolution in a single trait is hardly
"unprecedented", and it does not mean that humans have a "unique
position in the tree of life". A doubling of brain size in a million or
so years is not nearly as dramatic as documented evolutionary changes
that have occurred in insects in a single century.
Finally, even granting a special status to cognitive traits, human
evolution speed may well be unusual without being unique. It might
be interesting to study the rate of evolution of the dolphin's sonar
capabilities, or the homing pigeon's magnetic sense.
