Hello Michiel.

31 Jul 05 17:44, you wrote to me:

MvdV> If that is the same as what they offer as ISDN here that is a rip off.
MvdV> But I educated guess is that it is comparing apples to oranges.

It was $150/mo for the circuit and $150/mo for the internet access. I was a
special case so had to pay $150 for the circuit versus the regular $50 because
ISDN wasn't available locally. I had to get Houston circuit (60 miles away).
It was good at the time because it allowed me to have a Houston number even
though I didn't live near houston. Every other number assigned here is local
and hence long distance charges are involved!!!! So, I paid $150/mo and had
access to all the providers in the houston area, and could call other nodes too
if I wanted. Better than keeping a connection nailed up and paying LD over
ISDN!!! Later, bell was forced to make it the same price as though I lived in
Houston but had to allow me to keep my Houston numbers. :-) The ruling
basically said they had to make ISDN available to all and not charge extra.

MvdV> Over here ISDN is always dial up. Not "dedicated". The montle fee
MvdV> for an ISDN/2 is slightly less than the montly fee for two analog
MvdV> lines. For that you get two channels that can either be used for
MvdV> voice or for data up to 64kbs. The cost per time unit per channel is
MvdV> the same as for an analog line.

How much for the circuit itself?

MvdV> That changed of course with the introduction od adsl and I know some
MvdV> who downgraded from ISDN to analog again.

DSL is nice for that. Get an extra line, run your POTS on it, and get your
internet over it! I dont do that here.

My POTS POP is actually located in Wharton but my Fidonet node (the one I write
on, processes mail, and serves content) is located in SW Houston (~60 miles).
The POTS works by mounting a NFS exported volume which is access over an
encrypted VPN. The POTS POP would break when the DSL IP would change but I
finally got it working reliabily by using a VPN client that auto reconnects.
Before, I used the kernel level IPSEC so I had to change the IP manually at the
server and client to fix it when it went down. :-) On the POTS side, it uses
distinctive ring to determine a mailer call. So if you hit my pots node, you
are actually getting your content 60 miles over the internet via an encrypted
vpn. But if you hit the internet address, its on this server, via highspeed
links. I am sure nobody has ever done that. Heh.

MvdV> Yet, the method is better than any other methods presently in use.
MvdV> CRC's are not unique either for the simple reason that converting
MvdV> messages to CRC's is not a one to one mapping process. There are many
MvdV> more possible different messages than there are possible CRC's. So
MvdV> there are many, an infinite number actually, that will result in the
MvdV> same CRC. So false positives are possible and therefore will occur.
MvdV> Thye onl;y way to illiminate false dupes is to compare the entire
MvdV> message after a matching CRC. But that requires storing the entire
MvdV> message. All of them for three years...

I am going to test using other "hash" methods and if I can find a good one,
might disable dupe checking in my tosser and code it into the perl filter. I
can store my dupe database inside mysql or a berkley database. the perl hooks
in hpt have got to be one of the coolest things.

MvdV> Then his dupe base was not large enough....

Or, flaws in the implementation.

MvdV> Plus that there is few software around that supports it. Just like the
MvdV> PING flag. I am pleased to see that you support it.

If you can generate an ARQ, try it! Perhaps I should turn mine on by default
to see how many (if any) systems support it.

Matt
