RN>
RN> Depends on where you live, I think. Not all areas are alike.

On the gain, I can say we noticed it in Chicago (airport stop) but it didnt
really sink in before the 2 weeks in Norfolk. We didnt get anyplace else so
stands to reason some places where better. Whats wierd was we were mostly on
a military installation. Folks there are normally trimmer. *including the
family*.

Shortly after we got back from Norfolk, the military hadall sorts of new
information on a plan to get the military (Navy mostly as i'm Navy) to a new
fitness 'way of life'. At *last* they are telling the bosses to let folks
have time during the workday, *without extending the workday* to get fit.
Thats been the main Navy problem all my career. The paultry few programs they
have had for my last 22 years, involved working out either by extending work
hours or 'on your own time'. Imagine being at sea for 10 months like I was
last year, and being told when you finally get to homeport, your workhours
inport changed from 7am-4:30pm to 5:30am-4:30pm so you can 'workout'. Goes
over like a lead-balloon.

My *own* shop though did well. My fellow Chief and I took the 12 hour shifts
they all have to work, and broke the center part so all have a 2 hour time to
eat and PT (not always right together as we have watches to man) but it worked
for all but one fellow of my 36. That one fellow is 50lbs overweight and has
medical problems preventing normal PT. He's a known case that will be rotated
to shore duty soon and if they cant help him fix his medical problems, he will
be medically retired. I have a shop of 40 people. Only he had a problem with
the PRT cycle we just took. Averages in other divisions were 'not as good'.
Something like 3% (the one fellow due to bodyfat) of my division failed to
pass. All my division passed the run and pushups etc.

Thats true! Still, there simple stuff people seem to no longer do and
reasonable stuff that gets folks in trouble that shouldnt.

Hey, do you get POL_INC? This might be a thread better there.

RN> The heat index here is around 110F right now. It looks like the temps
RN> are going to stay in the mid-to-upper 90s at least for the rest of thi

I give on heat indexes here by now. We use 'real temps' and warn that 'index'
is apt to be 20 degrees higher. Our real temp is pushing 103F in the morning
to 108F by worst of the afternoon. Can exceed 120F in several spaces inside a
metal ship.

'Man down, Man down, (insert location), medical response team away'. I fear
each occurance that it's one of my own men but I have a tight control on them
and will not allow them to go anyplace to work outside my airconditioned Radio
unless in teams of 2 and I check on them. Got blasted my the CMC (Command
MasterChief) just a few days ago because I didnt have anyone in the troop
berthing during 'cleaning time'. Blasted back that *I* pulledthem out for a
cooldown and water break just 5 mins before and didnt he notice how *hot* it
was in that spot just then? (He was quite ammendable after that and said
thats what he's telling all of us to do, just didnt realize at the moment it
was one of those situations when he started on asking about it).

CS> We actually here talk temps by 'water bottle' meaning how many 12oz
CS> or so bottles you drink in a 1 hour period. We are in the 2 bottle
 CS> range. Saturday was a 3 bottle day (108F by 10am).
RN>
RN> I measure mine, as you may recall, by the gallon.

So do we over a day, but my 3 bottle an hour is about 1/2 gallon an hour. My
concern is that *I* have to run from team to team to check on them and might
be the next 'man down'. The ship is bringing in 3,000 16OZ bottles of water a
day plus 50 20G cooler bottles. Many shops (like mine) also pool cash and
bring in things like gatoraide (my shop specifically, 50 16oz a day).

RN>
CS> On the ship, which is in the 'yards' with all the AC shut down, we
CS> have announcements every 2 hours to stop all work for mandatory
CS> 'hydration'. They tell us the temp outside, the temp on the 02
CS> (always higher due to metal decks), temp in engineering (actually
CS> cooler than the 02 level as the engines are shut down) and a
CS> selection of other random spots about the ship. It's a good thing
CS> Friday was a Japanese holiday and most of the workers were off
CS> because it got so hot, the Japanese forman would have had to pull
CS> off most his workers. As it is, the CO told everyone to go home if
CS> they couldnt find someplace cooler to work in than the 02
CS> (exclusive of the few spots with portable AC for critical servers
 CS> etc).
RN>
RN> That has to be very close to unbearable. Docked and under way are so
RN> different, many don't realize what that difference can be in temps.

Yup. It's getting easier but not because the temps are lower, but because we
are acclimated now. The 'UW vs DOCKED' arent the issue. Its the AC being
totally out. You know how hot a bit of metal can be in direct sunlight on a
sunny day. You can burn your feet if you stand too long in one spot even
through your boots, on the flight deck. Right below it is the second hottest
spot on the ship (02). Next hottest spot is my troop berthing. Engineering
is cooler as it's shut down and the water about the hull is cooling it to mere
90F. Temps higher above waterline for the most part.
                                       xxcarol
