Actually the first amendment is designed to stop governmental 
*interference* with religion as was so often the case in Europe, 
the home of the Founding Fathers.  Religion and democratic ideals 
mesh perfectly.  BTW if you *really* want to study religious 
bigotry in America look into the 1920s with particular attention 
to the anti-Christian KKK ...
