Correction to This Article
A Sept. 4 article on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina incorrectly
said that Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco (D) had not
declared a state of emergency. She declared an emergency on Aug. 26.

The claim that "the President declared the area a national disaster
area before the state of Louisiana did" appears to be based on an
erroneous statement made by an unnamed Bush administration official,
as reported in the Washington Post (emphasis ours)

The original version of this story incorrectly reported that Louisiana
Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco had been "hesitant to declare martial
law or a state of emergency." In fact, Gov. Blanco declared a state
of emergency Friday, Aug. 26, before Katrina hit the state.

Like The Washington Post, Newsweek incorrectly reported in its
September 12 issue that Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco was
slow to declare a state of emergency in the state, purportedly
delaying federal assistance in dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane
Katrina. In fact, Blanco declared a state of emergency on August 26,
before Katrina made landfall. But while the Post has corrected its
false reporting, Newsweek has not yet done so -- despite the fact that
the magazine has already corrected another error in the same article.

The September 12 edition of Fox News' Hannity & Colmes included a
deceptive on-screen Hurricane Katrina timeline that purported to cover
developments in the storm and emergency response from August 24-30.
Echoing a Bush administration official who falsely told The Washington
Post that Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco (D) failed to
declare a state of emergency, Fox's timeline omitted Blanco's August
26 declaration of a state of emergency while including similar
declarations by the Republican governors of Mississippi and Alabama.

Gov. Blanco Issues State of Emergency in Preparation for Hurricane
Katrina BATON ROUGE, LA--Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco has issued
Proclamation No. 48 KBB 2005, declaring a state of emergency for the
state Louisiana as Hurricane Katrina poses an imminent threat

Seems to me that if 'your' news sources are saying that Blanco didn't
declare a state of emergency on the 26th then they are not all that
fair & balanced.
