His statement demonstrates his paradigm regarding freedom.  Our society is 
based on the fact that armed people overthrew the British ruling government 
and created a sovereign nation with sovereign people (back when people were 
actually known as sovereigns), and wrote an article into the constitution an 
article that would grant us the freedom of continuing to arm ourselves.  Our 
right to arm ourselves is only one aspect of our culture that demonstrates 
that we "are a free nation" (I don't think EU countries like to hear that).

Of note, I see nothing in our constitution that says we must be polite... 
<g>... But on that note, ff one travels to France, are they met with 
kindness, politeness and respect?  Not likely <g>....

I grew up in the Panhandle of Texas, and I had both a rifle and shotgun in 
my back window.  When we would ride and check on the cattle every morning, 
we would carry a pistol.  People who didn't know would "assume" this was for 
bad guys.  On the contrary, this was for snakes and varmints of all kinds. 
One hates to loose a horse that costs $2,000 or more to a rattlesnake. 
Better shoot the rattlesnake before it bites the horse (or cow for that 
matter).  On a great occasion (really before my time) there were vagrants 
who would travel the open plains and -- when encountered -- may have shown 
violent tendencies.  It was only right for the ranch hand to arm themselves.

Perhaps we need to look at gun control a little harder because inner cities 
do have a problem.  I don't think that an open ban or an open store are good 
options, but that's for a discussion at a later time.
