You have to ask yourself, what does this article have to do with Fidonet
and why would the Fidonews Editor put such trash into a publication of a
hobby that has nothing to do with such matters?

Maybe Vlist has an inside track on this story. Could be that it was a
relative or maybe his son..

That's correct. So maybe the inside track is wrong.

And when he was released from prison, the Federal Prison system had him
listed at age 27, two years after he was arrested.

Perhaps it didn't dawn on Vlist that the people he's referring to knew
that Blom screwed up and they thought that the dude deserved to be in
jail. Only irrational people like Vlist would think otherwise.
