  I'll give you the four that you named (although I would not have said
  England, I would have said United Kingdom) as existing when the USA
  was formed.   Of the 25 nations in the European Union, I would also
  give you Poland, Greece, Sweden, Finland and Denmark as being
  countries which can claim existence pre-USA.  Poland is a special case
  in that for part of the last two centuries it ceased to exist, but
  I'll give it to you anyhow.   Of the remaining sixteen countries in
  the EU, I count seven which came into existance more or less as they
  are today in the 19th century and nine which did not exist until the
  20th century.

  Even when you toss in the rest of Europe, I stick by my statement of
  many -- and even revise it to say "the majority" of European countries
  did not exist when the USA was formed.

  This is not to say that the various areas so not have a long and rich
  recorded history of the peoples in those areas.  They do.
