I've been reading the BBC wires over here too, and your assessment is (imho) 
right on the mark.

A few years ago they had a 'somewhat' liberal president and he frequently 
clashed with the Iatola.  Now, this new guy is extremely hard lined and is 
an obvious puppet of the religious leaders.

He has lined up the youth in a ceremoniously gesture of 'them' (the 
westerners) against us (the Persians).  Me and a few others had been 
chatting frequently with a few university students in a city in Iran. I'll 
leave the specifics out of this story for obvious reasons.  These students 
were telling us about their daily lives, and we were doing the same.  We had 
very short discussions about politics, but the main theme of our 
conversations were centered around learning about each other's paradigms. 
There were only a few places on could get Internet access in Iran, and these 
folks were doing getting online from one of the only internet cafes in this 
populated area in which they lived. They told us one day after this new 
president assumed power that government officials said that Internet was a 
tool of the devil and that they would loose access soon.  A few days later 
they (we guess) did loose access, and we haven't heard from them since. 
What I gathered from our conversations was they were picking up western 
traits and cultural idioms and these were being frowned upon by the 
religious factions within the country.  The youth were beginning to embrace 
westernism.  But, all that is changing now....  It's back to the way it was 
during the early to mid 1970's.

I'm all about living and let living.. It's their world, and if they want to 
leave, they'll leave.  But I fear that soon these people will attack you 
(Europeans) or Israel.  I think this is inevitable.  I also think that we 
(almost) need to wait until they do attack before doing something.  I fear 
that because we have intervened in so much so recently, that any preemptive 
action taken against that country would be perceived as an act of 
aggression.  And, well -- it would be.

We've retaliated against Iran before, as well as I'm sure you remember (I 
do), and we'll likely do it again.  But, with a Republican like Bush in the 
administration, it won't be a toe-tap retaliation, it'll be a hammer.
