==================
Hello Jack,

Sorry for the delay in reply, been busy.

JY> firewood but I'm cutting up logs in the 18"-36" range and
JY> would rather have a used professional saw than a new
 JY> Homelite of any kind.

Heh... :) Big wood, eh? I just took down one of the biggest poplar trees I
have ever seen 2 days ago. The base (butt) of the tree was easily around 5' in
diamiter (did I spell that right?, oh well)... Stood over 70 feet tall, and I
had to climb it to make sure the limbs didn't fall in the parking lot. The
climbing was the easy part. (Been in old growth trees of different types well
over 100') Dropping the remaining 40' I left standing without having it roll
down the hill was the tricky part. Didn't use the Husky with the 3' bar, but
rather used my Stihl 066 with a 20" bar. Wanted to make sure the cut was
controlled rather than bulled. Poplar trees have a tendancy to -snap- rather
than peel. Hard to describe the method I used if one hasn't done it. Knowing it
would snap, using the smaller bar leaves you knowing that a butt log that size
will have some meat left in the middle as you're cutting, and the weight of the
tree itself, along with placement of the the pie cut, will allow it to fall
exactly where you want it to. As it wants to snap, the meat left will still
hold it and make it peel slowly in the desired direction before it lets go and
snaps,
and you don't get a bounce that would have caused it to take that roll down the
hill. The way I did it wouldn't work with something like an oak though.
Completely different reaction from the wood. The thing will still hang without
peeling at all. I actually got a kick out of this one... the ground crew was
telling me I was nuts, and they backed further away from this one than I ever
saw them do before. All I could say after it went exactly as planned is "how
do you like me now?" :) One guy tried to tell me "you got lucky"... My reply
was "Yea, I guess, but you've seen me get awful lucky alot of times. Maybe it
isn't luck at all though, and the three hour video I watched last
night taught me something." ;>

PL>>>> I'm happy to run "Out On A Limb" Tree Service...

JY>>> Neat name; I like it.

PL>> I get that alot. Definately wanted something catchy for the
PL>> advertising, and that seems to work :)

JY> We have two arborists here; "Chips" and "Tree Worx".

Well, I wanted it to be a catchy name for advertising purposes, If I only had
one other competitor for the work, it wouldn't matter, but the area I service
is the NY Capital District which covers three counties and the southern part of
another. Just within a few miles of me, the ones I can think of of the top of
my head (and owners of which I know personaly) are:

Able Tree Service
The Cuting Edge
TreeCo
Vogel's Tree Service
Best Tree Service
Adirondack Tree Srevice
Jimes Tree Service
Joe The Tree Guy
Dan Mickle - Independant Arborist Co.
Puma Tree Service
and even more...

These are just located in the county I am in, and we all buck for service
throughout the entire Capital District. The competition is fierce.

Luckily I have established myself enough that it isn't much of a hassle though.
I give my price, and that is my price. I get the a-holes who will say "well,
this one told me 600 bux less" and the like, and I just tell them "call them
back then, I don't need the job... make sure they are fully insured though and
don't have 50 dollar a day crackheads on their crew. Nobody on my crew has less
than 10 years experience" Believe it or not,
I've gotten people who have called me back and had me do the job at a higher
price after I told them something had to be wrong if another would do it for
the price they were quoted, and they'll get what they pay for.

Ah... enough blabbing for me. The Beck's I'm downing like chocolate milk, (not
to mention the gallon of "Ginny Red" I got from a customer), has me buzzing
right now :) I could likely type until I pass out.

Regards,

Phil
