I'm affraid that in order to keep Iraq from falling into an abyss there is only
one viable solution to keep the genie where it is ... a long-term international
peace-keeping and policing force under UN-mandate.
 
I cannot offer an opinion what "long-term" could mean but 2-3 years certainly
will not do the trick.
 
The problem, as I see it, is that the peace-keeping and policing is now an
American initiative and under influence of US politics the effort will not be
continued long enough to be effective. If this President does not call the
troops back, then the next-one certainly will (have to). That is going to be
too early.
 
Ideally would be that the US would transfer their role to the UN which could
assemble an international blue-helmet force to take over. This force then could
be composed of perhaps UN-troops from that region.
 
Since Iraq is an autonomous country, at least we like to think it is, such a
UN-force would have to be invited, it could not arrive any other way because
otherwise it would be considered "an occupier".
 
The problem then that I see is that not every country in that area likes to
having a western-style democracy as a neighbour ... Saudi-Arabia, the Emirates,
Kuwait and several other countries overthere are not exactly shining examples
of democracy either. If they can avoid their own citizens from getting crazy
ideas about democracy then that would suit these regimes which, by any
definition, are dictatorships.
 
You ask a difficult question, Shannon!
