GL> Quoting Philip Lozier to Björn Felten

PL>> If I ever had to do that, as a user, to get to participate in an echo,
PL>> I would have just said "F*CK THAT" right off the rip, and never have
 PL>> seen anything FidoNet.
PL>> Just my view on that proceedure you described anyway. Very poor
 PL>> method of access.

GL> I agree with you Philip. I have over 100 areas active in
 GL> the bbs,
GL> but I certainly don't read all of them. The echos aren't
 GL> for my
GL> exclusive enjoyment, they are for my users!

I currently have 792 going through the BBS, and am adding more. I just
recently rebuilt my BBS from scratch after the fiasco that kept me away from
Fido for a few months. Had to rebuild EVERYTHING... anyway, with todays
availability of telnet for the BBS the possibility of international callers is
very likely. Because of that I have begun to add international echoes in other
than English (which, incidently, almost NONE of are elisted)... have the German
and Russian echoes flowing through here now, and am ready to start adding a few
more nations at a time.

Now.. I am -never- going to be able to read and participate in echoes in these
languages, never mind be able to keep track of who on my BBS posts what in
them. The concept is ludicrous. The areas are there for potential BBS users
that may find them useful. If a moderator has a problem with what somebody on
the board posts, it is up to -them- to contact -me- and let me handle it on my
end, not for me to police each and every single echo on my board and basicly do
the moderators job for them. In all reality, *I* am doing the moderator a
service by providing their echo where it may get more traffic, not the other
way around... toooooo many echoes to choose from... I'm not going to jump
through those kinds of hoops just to carry one stinking echo. Like I say, if a
moderator has a problem with a user here, -they- can contact -me-, and if the
complaint is warranted, I will deal with the user, not to mention the issue of
who the -moderator- actually is, on a common sense basis.

BTW... common sense in this particular echo tells me that Bjorn Felten is the
rightful moderator. In echoes where there is no moderator dispute, the e-list
tells it, or, if in an area that doesn't honor/use the e-list then it is the
person who claimed the title first and is recognized by the majority of
participants.

GL> I have seen bbs's and sysops who operated somewhat like
 GL> Felton,
GL> and I must say, I never called them again. Seems to be a
 GL> very
GL> arrogant attitude on Felton's part and the bit about
 GL> making a user
GL> in charge of the local msgs is nothing short of the sysop
 GL> shirking
 GL> his duties.

A moderator operating an echo under such impossitions would be a moderator
shirking their own duties IMO.

GL> When I set up my echo base, I naturally choose those
 GL> echos I was
GL> interested in, plus I added all that I could think of
 GL> that the
GL> users might be interested in. This led to my having
 GL> ruffly half of
 GL> the available echos active.

I just decided that anything that has traffic will flow through the BBS... even
though I might not be interested in it, or capable of understanding it,
somebody else just might be. After all, that is what we run a BBS for, isn't
it? To have users enjoy and use what we worked hard on, and to interact with
them? My personal message preferences are handled off the BBS, where I only
need be presented with the areas I do want to aprticiapte in. If I just wanted
-me- to have what -I- want, then I would be a single user node (over glorified
point is what I think those are really, not worthy of the title SysOp).

GL> But I must say, this whole attitude that the bbs is the
 GL> sysop's
GL> personal playground, users are a bother, is what makes
 GL> bbs's with
 GL> no users.

100% agreed. I am hoping that what I am putting together now will be a BBS
where the users feel very welcome and right at home. It still has a long way
to go, but I think it's coming along nicely.

Anyone wanting to take a peak at the progress can telnet://tqcbbs.dyndns.org
for a looksee. Only a few test users right now, mostly SysOps or ex-SysOps,
but for the most part the basics are all functional. Some extended stuff I
still need to work on, but it's there.

GL> Treat your users with respect and they will respect you
 GL> and your
 GL> bbs.

Absolutely,

Phil
