BF>> on spot, and coincides very much with my view on the US. I have
BF>> lots of friends over there, that I visit regularly, and -- for
BF>> obvious reasons -- many of them are first or second generation
 BF>> USAians.

PL> Trust me... I can understand why. Myself, I have never gotten along
PL> much with "The good 'ol boys"... that's what I call the people who
PL> have many generations here... at least not up north here. Down
PL> south, a little different. At least they still have somewhat of a
PL> culture not based on the fast paced self serving "new age", and for
PL> the most part still have a moral value and a sense of what's right
PL> and what's wrong, and what is and is not.

PL> Not really with ever making it a point to be that way, it has turned
PL> out that most of the people who have become my "good" freinds have
PL> been of no more than one or two generations here.

That's because you and they have yet to be accepted here. With your
illitieracy and instinctive aggression, you're a loser in the eyes of
those who have established themselves here. You won't be accepted until
you're made humble enough to admit you're fucked up in the head. In your
case, that'll be the day you're finally layed out in your wooden box.

PL>>> I sometimes wish that my family did NOT migrate to the USA in the
 PL>>> mid 50's.

 BF>> Don't do that!

 PL> I said "sometimes". :) I do love this country... I just don't like
PL> the direction it's going in lately, but I still have hope.

BF>> The US society needs a lot of antipodes to the
BF>> stereotypes that we see so much of in the media.

PL> But I, or people like me, could make no difference. We have no
PL> -real- voice in anything in this diverted society who would just GIVE
 PL> their rights away?

 BF>> After all, it has
BF>> always been the generations that took the bold step to go over
BF>> there and build themselves a new future, that has made the USA what
 BF>> it is today.

PL> What it is today? Is that good or bad?

PL>>> To be honest, as a first generation born here person, I was brought
PL>>> up with European values, and as I get older it just reaffirms what
PL>>> I have known all along... that the American people are some of the
PL>>> most spoiled, arrogant, foolish, and self serving jackasses on the
 PL>>> planet.

BF>> I still haven't really been able to digest the Roper Survey of
 BF>> 2002 (http://felten.se/RoperSurvey.pdf). It's one thing that only
BF>> 16% of the average USAians can locate Sweden on a map of the world,
BF>> but that only nine in ten young Americans (89%) could correctly
BF>> locate the United States (up seven points from the 1988 study), is
BF>> really amazing. And there are several other, really scary, numbers
 BF>> in that report.

PL> When I went to school, Geography was still consdiered very improtant,
PL> not only in pinpointing on the map, but knowing all the capitals of
PL> each state, and of the nations of the world, and you COULD flunk out
PL> a grade over it. I understand some schools dont even teach it
PL> anymore, and ones that do put very little importance in it.

PL> Think that's scary? Go to a convenient store these days and buy
PL> $4.63 cents worth of stuff, and pay with a 5 dollar bill! That's
PL> scary! I had to actually tell a kid what coins he needed to give me
PL> to make the right change. Okay... he was "new" so he said, but jeeze
PL> man, come ON! I've had other lovely experiences with cashiers too...
PL> for crying out loud! The machine tells you all the numbers, what's
 PL> the problem?

PL> When I was a teenager I worked a cash register... it was one of those
PL> old NCR's with those keys you set in place and pull down... did no
PL> math for you... you just enetered the total and KA-CHING! Had to
PL> figure the totals and tax in your head as you went, and you had to do
PL> it fast as it was a fast paced restaraunt. I was 14, and still in
PL> school, and I see high school graduates these days who couldn't even
PL> THINK of it if the machine didn't tell them everything they needed to
PL> know, and then STILL have problems.

PL> Well.. it's written off as stuff they wouldn't want to do anyway...
PL> after all, that's what we have Mexicans for... but thank GOD (and
PL> many many disagree with it, but) for the announcement that we're
PL> tightening up our southern border. I applaud that move, and I'd
PL> really like to know why it didn't happen long ago. After all, the
PL> problem has been obvious forever. Unfortunately, that -does- seem to
PL> be something many are against these days, yet only a couple of
PL> decades ago people screaming for to happen.... diverted society.
