I don't know what he's making, but having lived down there seeing what they
pay, I would say it isn't as much as he would make doing the same thing up
here.

I own "Out On A Limb" Tree Service, and the guys on my crew get paid 100bux a
day... even if we only went out and did a job that took 4 hours to do.

Now if I went into that area and wanted to start my tree service there, I KNOW
FROM EXPERIENCE, people would look at me like I had three heads when I was
pricing the jobs. That's why I left the area.

A couple of years ago it was all over the news about the big ice storm that hit
the Piedmont, and the extensive tree damage that there was, so myself and
another guy loaded up the saws and exuipment and drove on down.  Tree sevices
from EVERYWHERE had converged on the area... did a few jobs getting trees off
of peoples houses and quickly decided to pack up and head back north.  Figured
out fast that there was more money to be made in my own area working under
normal "casual" working conditions than working for peanuts under emergency
conditions.  Friggin people down in Charlotte were more worried about how much
the cost their insurance company would have to pay (THE INURANCE COMPANY,
NOT EVEN THEM!) than if the huge tree putting all kinds of
pressure on their roof would collapse the house.  A few
different folk turned me off real quick that way... No thanks.

I'd love to go back down there, and in fact I will be back down there, but I'm
going to work up here and over the next few years scope out a piece of land for
later use as I reach a time when I decide I'm getting ready to retire. At least
up here, with some of the downfalls there are, I know I can work to retire down
there in the way I want to, and where I want to.

What I really want to do is semi-retire to live in Cana, Va and open a pizza
shop in Mount Airy... two pizza shops in the whole town... one is Domino's
(nuff said) and the other -independant- shop has pizza that looks (and tastes)
like an abortion on bread.  I can likely make a good living in my later years
running a real NYC style pizza shop.
