Oh yes certainly, I have had a few 'steel junkers' myself, A 1969 (I think that
was the year) Chevrolet Biscayne station wagon for one, at the same time I also
owned a Jaguar 420G, in every way the Jaguar was a better car than the Chevy,
until you came to load carrying ;>  We got the bloody Chevy stuck in a parking
building once, it was too wide to get past the pay booth !!! I've had GMs and
Fords at odd times and all have been extreamly reliable, all have rusted ;( and
all have been good open road cruising cars, they didn't slow down on hills.
Some years back I drove a few months old Merc 190E from Auckland to Wellington
and return, 650Km each way, over the Christmas break. The following Easter I
drove a 15 year old Ford Station wagon to exactly the same destination and
back, the Ford was better, absolutly no doubt about it. Less petrol, less road
time, less stops and less wear on the driver (me).  The Merc took 9 hrs about
each way, the Ford about 8 hours, neither beat the Jag which managed a six hour
trip one night without stopping, twin fuel tanks with 100 ltrs. (My adopted
sister lived in Wellington for a number of years)

I would never denigrate the steel junker, but nothing compares with driving
some thing like my Lancia fast over a winding central North Island road, the
junker would be over the edge on the first bend, the Lancia is 4WD, 220 bhp
from 2000 cc of twin OHC turbo charged Italian hotrod (1989 Integrale). My work
wagon is just a Renault, but I would have no worries taking Roy's Camaro on
with the Lancia, other than the damn speed cameras as I would go through them
first every time ;)
