Still doesn't give me a clear picture... oh well.

I've done alot of insurance work... alot.  State farm was only willing to pay
for a patch job to the actual damaged areas.  They don;t give a crap of how it
looks (the insurance company) but just how cheap they could get off.  You opted
to replace the entire roof surface rather than just go for the rip and patch
job State Farm was willing to cover.
That costs money "out of pocket". You chose the right way... you must
obviously care about such things, and you must also realize that 99.9% of
insurance companies suck big balls.

The only way I could liken it... if you had "tire insurance" and you had a
puncture, the insurance company will only pay for a plug when you (and even
they) know damn well a new tire is called for.
