There was a fellow here who retired shortly before I did.  He was assigned to
Offutt
out of basic training and aside from two 1 year tours in Southeast Asia he
spent his
entire career at Offutt.  He retired as an E-9 ...

Actually in my case - and I discovered this shortly before I bailed out - I was
frozen
for an overseas assignment in an old career field (I arrived at Offutt as a
communications
analyst - CT in the Navy, I think - and cross-trained into computer operations
and again
into computer programming).  Turns out I wasn't needed in that old field for
several
(many) years, and when they decided they needed me the computer kicked out an 
assignment to Heraklion, Greece.  Got that one cancelled and a month later got
another
one to Yokota.  Got that one cancelled and applied for retirement.

I sure hope not.  I guess I'll find out.  SS sends me a letter every year
telling
me what my check will be if I apply at 62, 65 and 68 (the 68 check is biggest).
The 62 check is just about what I'm getting from my IRA.  Before taxes.

I hope so.  I had a co-worker who was also retired AF, with a disability.
His retirement check (annuity is what they call it) was reduced by the
percentage
of disability he'd been granted, and he received another check from the VA for
that
disability, IIRC the same dollar amount as what was subtracted from the AF
check.
The VA check was tax free.

Mine makes the mortgage payment (includes property taxes and homeowner's
insurance premium), VGLI and Tricare with about $30/month left over.
