Hello Dan,

>ST>I completely disagree with this... Although I've remained silent for
>ST>many of your messages, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were both civilian
>ST>targets, were not necessary to win the war, and had a devastating

DC>Actually, that isn't true. Both cities were producing war
DC>materials. And, one was a major staging area for the Japanese
DC>army. As to Nagasaki, it was unlucky simply because of the
DC>weather. The primary target that day was under cloud cover.

Neither Hiroshima nor Nagasaki were military targets, never having
been bombed during WWII. The equivalent of an Army ROTC unit does
not count as being a realistic military threat to our forces. And
that was about all that either Hiroshima or Nagasaki had in regards
to military defense capability.

>ST>effect on the country and their people for generations. It was a
>ST>mistake, and one even our military leaders who made the decision to do
>ST>it -- actually regret making.

DC>It was the collateral damage that was regretted the most. Few, if
DC>any, involved in the choice of using those weapons really understood
DC>the long term consequences.

Oppenheimer was very aware of what kind of damage those kinds of weapons
could do. So were many other scientists.

DC>I know that Truman would never celibrate his decision, not then,
DC>nor now. Now, Curtis LeMay...

After the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Gen. LeMay wanted
Truman to level a few Soviet cities. After all, we had the Bomb and
the Soviets didn't. Fortunately, Truman had a tad bit more sense than
LeMay. Not much. But a tad bit.
