 Essentially life in Japan would go on as it had been. The allies
 wanted an end to the Japanese system.

 Removing a system that was more evil than even Bush claimed for
 Iraq was necessary. The fact that the Japanese leadership was
 not willing to agree to it meant that we would have had to
 invade.

 I will argue that what we did in insisting in a total change was
 a net gain for the Japanese. If you think we have a problem with
 trafficing of women, slavery, in Japan they didn't consider it a
 problem, but a normal part of life. Before the war the
 militarists solved their problem with internal disagreement by
 killing the peace and democracy advocates.

 I have read of what was done to our troops who were POWs, but
 they did the same sort of things to civilian prisoner. The abuse
 of civilian populations in conquered territories qualified the
 entire Japanese military as a terrorist organization.

 For that the Japanese system had to be brought down. Which the
 Japanese leadership was unwilling to do.

 Not as many as you think. Both cities are now inhabited again,
 and bigger than ever. I have also read that the residents of
 those cities have a longer life expectancy than the average. One
 of the factors that led to a study that seems to show that
 exposure to somewhat elevated radiation levels increases life
 expectancy.
