Hello Björn.

22 Sep 06 19:04, you wrote to me:

     Well bestill my heart. <g>

Ummm... Why do you ask? <g>

Then or now? I think it would have taken alot less action then than
it will now. I am sure that you realize that maintaining control of an
echo is alot easier than trying to get control of an echo after it has
fallen in total chaos. I can only speak generally as we haven't chatted
much to date on the subject. Communication and respect are the two best
tools that a moderator has. The ability to be able to communicate effectively
with people. Regardless of whether you like or dislike them.
To be able to reason and work out problems with people. To be able and
willing to listen to opinions and views that you may or may not agree
with. The ability to apply an existing set of echo guidelines to all
echo participants (Friend and foe alike) as well as thyself. If a moderator
is fair towards all in his moderating and the application of any echo
guidelines. People will usually see that and be willing to respect that
and the moderator will alot less problems. At one time I moderated the
Z1_BACKBONE echo which was a rather busy echo at the time. During my
time as moderator I don't recall having to request a feed cut even once.
I was able to talk to the offending person(s) and work with them to
resolve any issues that may have caused a problem. Yes there is always the
possibility of someone that flatly refuses to listen or cooperate. And
yes there are fewer options today than there was years ago. But that doesn't
mean that one should not try. Another duty (If applicaple) is the timely
updating of the elist for the echo in question. Also a certain amount of
visibility as moderator in the echo is usefull. It helps show the echo
participants that the moderator is there and and is actively moderating the
echo. I say a certain amount of visibility because I have found that too
much makes the moderator appear more as a dictator than a moderator.
Netmail is another very usefull tool. While I would use the echo to make
moderating suggestions. I would use netmail when a more direct approach
was nessesary.

It isn't that I am saying that you should not be the moderator
Björn. What I am saying is there needs to be an active moderator in this
echo. If you can and are willing to spend the time nessesary to regain
control then fine. If not then you should find someone that can. Although
it may matter to some. It shouldn't matter from what zone the moderator
comes from. The fidonews echo is a interzonal echo and should not be
linked or bound to a particular zone. A view that is not held by several
people from Z2. I have been told that the Fidonews echo is a Z2 echo and
to either accept that or go elsewhere. I fail to see any bennefit for
Fidonet or the Fidonews echo from that type of attitude.

Given more thought I could probably be more articulate in my
response.
