That's because in the US the word "nigger" has acquired a special 
status.  It's probably the *only* word one doesn't *dare* use.  
And this despite the fact that a half-century ago it was commonly 
used with no particular derogatory meaning ... [sigh] ... while I 
haven't used it for a long time -- feeling it's borderline 
illiterate -- I see nothing wrong with using it ... OTOH, a 
half-century ago using the term "black" to refer to a person was 
a *fighting* word ... now it seems to be approved ... just as 
"colored person" has returned as an approved phrase ... it can be 
difficult to keep up with the "approved" phraseology ...
