But you found it on my system anyway, I was baffled by that discovery. So I
went looking, and what did I find?
 
As is customary I received FNEWSN39.ZIP from the editor early on Monday
September the 25th 2006. It got processed, it got mailed-out to the contacts
who receive it on a weekly basis, including Bob Seaborn ... and then suddenly a
few hours after that event took place, the following pops-up in my log-files:

My trust is 100% with Bob Seaborn who'll do his best to have an as close as
possible technical flawless operation ... and doing a pretty good job at that
if I may add.
 
So somebody tricked him into distributing something he probably does not agree
with. But how to find out who did it...
 
How to find the trusted person who dropped a modified ZIP-archive on Bob's
system where it was, of course, not recognised as a dupe and it got released
Fidowide again. Bob is not an uplink of mine for the Fidonews file-release so
it was not processed here, merely made it to the ftp-area where it was in the
meantime replaced by a correct version from a trustworthy source ... Godzilla
at 2:203/208 himself.
 
Now what kind of person would alter the ZIP-archive and send it without
notification of any kind downstream well knowing it would not dupe and get a
Fido-wide distribution? I'd call that a voluntary and deliberate attempt of
falsification of the Fidonews archive-integrity since the day the first issue
was released way-way back in time ... If only we could figure-out the culprit.
 
Hmmmm ... hey, there's a TIC-file that came-along ... and TIC-files have
path-entries ... Wow, yeah ... I've still got AP7LMCOI.TIC ... lemme see:

Holy smoke ... the FNEWSN39.ZIP-release was in-transit modified by the Damsel
in Distress herself and sent-out to Bob Seaborn well knowing that the high- and
trustworthy profile which Bob enjoys Fidowide would ensure global distribution
and as a consequence corrupt most people's filebase of FIDONEWS-releases.
 
Wowwwww ... a ZC ... :-(
 
If I were to do that, I am pretty certain that the combined membership of
zone-1 and other zones would scream from the top of their lungs for my removal
as ZC ... pretty justified so, I would say. Most likely such behaviour of their
ZC would be sufficient cause for Z2-RC's to unseat me as prescribed in P4 ...
Of course, I would do the only honourable thing available and drop the
function, call for elections and dissappear from the nodelist.
 
Except ... I didn't do it ... ZC/1 aka Janis Kracht at 1:1/0 did it ...
 
Come-on zone-1 RC's ... do you accept that your ZC alters in-traffic material,
unannounced, ships it out for worldwide re-distribution and gets away with it?
 
Please no discussion of copyright or content ... Is it permissable that a ZC
alters in-transit material and misleads the whole of Fidonet by doing so?
