For a long time the Catholic Church held that Mary Magdalene was a
prostitute.  But in 1969 the Catholic Church changed its mind, saying
she had some mental problems instead.  But that was okay, since Jesus
cured her.

Some folks claim that Mary Magdalene was the wife of Jesus.

It was the paragraph immediately following the portion that Muslims
were complaining about that refuted what the pope had said.

There are sections of the Quran in favor of jihad and the sword.
There are sections of the Bible in favor of holy war and the sword.
Does that mean that either Islam or Christianity are pro-war?
Not at all.  Both Islam and Christianity are anti-violence and
anti-war.  Judaism, on the other hand, is anti-violence, but
not necessarily anti-war.  Unless one looks at blowing down the
walls of Jericho with trumpets as being a satire on war rather
than a serious military tactic.  In which case Judaism is also
anti-war.

That does not mean that all three faiths are the same.

It was an academic speech, made in an academic setting.
Pope Benedict XVI was acting more like Professor Ratzinger,
which hopefully he will learn not to do so in the future.
But what he said is not actually objectionable.  The problem
is, some Muslims chose to be troublemakers, as those same
Muslims would have criticized B16 for anything at all they
may have found objectionable.
