That's right! He knew it, I knew it and everyone else who's read it knows
it. The problem is, he wouldn't acknowledge his typo, which in the
process, brought up his poor choice of words.

I know this is complicated for you. I'm not looking at it as merely a
typo, it's blatant mis-use of words.

Actually, his wording indicated that he did. In using 'instead of', the
sentence meant that he was sure that pi was not equal to 3 but that it was
equal to 3.1214. If you're having a hard time grasping the language,
perhaps a refresher in English 101 will help you.
