Replying to a message of Ross Cassell to mark lewis:

RC>>> Well if we dont make anything in this country, guess big business
RC>>> isnt doing as you say? Unionized labor was once a good thing, as
RC>>> with everything, a balance is needed and union labor has had the
RC>>> balance tipped well into their favor for too long and so long that
RC>>> it has hampered the competitiveness of the companies they work at.
RC>>> This is why you have seen manufacturing and jobs go overseas.

ml>> nope... that is pure greed... nothing less... corporate and
ml>> stockholder greed... corporations no longer have the responsibility
ml>> to take care of their customers... their job now days is to fleece
ml>> their customers and pay their stockholders...

RC> So you are saying that Ford, Chrysler, GM with their unionized help
RC> can compete with the non-union competition, such as but not limited
RC> to the Japanese and Korean brands?

They could if the unions would cooperate. But the UAW is a monopoly, it
doesn't
HAVE to cooperate, the unionized auto companies give it what it wants or they
go
out of business. Of course, given the demands the UAW has made and continues
to make, they're on their way out of business - or out of the country - anyway.

That is the problem, after all, with monopolies. They can charge whatever they
want for their product or service, particularly if the product or service is
something
that many if not most people require. And eventually the customers will find
an
alternative product or service not controlled by the monopoly, which then will
either
have to become price-competitive or go out of business.

ml>> it is all about the benjamins... nothing more and nothing less...

RC> Business has always been about making money.

ml>> how many companies/corporations do you truely see taking care of
ml>> their workforce with all the benefits and such bestowed on them by
ml>> the republicans? i see none... what i see is them shoveling below
ml>> federal poverty level wages and not caring one iota because there's
ml>> always another potential employee out there that is willing to
ml>> settle for less than poverty existance :(

 RC> Whats a fair wage?

Fair is a subjective concept. IMO it's enough to pay the rent, utilities and
food bill and put gas in the car; with a little left over. In my specific case
I could manage on about $30K/year, before taxes & FICA. In fact I'd like to,
I'll gross less than that this year by about $4K.

RC> I am told a wage that is twice or 2.5 times the existing minimum wage
 RC> isnt enough?

It may or may not be, depending on where one lives. It is possible to purchase
a nice existing house in my area for about $50K; that same house on the west
coast would cost about four times that. Groceries are cheaper here than on the
west coast, too. So is gasoline. And taxes are lower (except in Nebraska). I
just got the bill for my 2007 auto registration, $23.50.

RC> Labor costs is exactly why outsourcing occurs, do you want to make it
 RC> worse?

This is why I've been counselling youngsters to pick a career choice that
can't be outsourced. Plumber, electrician, carpenter, mason, nurse, physician,
HVAC tech, farmer, etc. A job that *requires* a physical presence in order
that it be performed.

RC> They already are experimenting with self service checkout and ordering
RC> at fast food restaurants. Many stores have adopted self serve
 RC> checkouts, bye bye cashiers.

Home Depot has them at its Council Bluffs store along with the regular
checkout stations. I refuse to use them; if they get rid of the regular
checkout
stations I'll shop elsewhere.

ml>> i made the statement, somewhere, before, that the republicans were
ml>> for business and that the democratics are for the people...

RC> Well ok, let them be for the people until they vanquish business, then
 RC> where will you be?

RC> Didnt you start truck driving, who created the need for you to drive
 RC> that truck?

 ml>> that statement
ml>> was directed at the teachings of the 60's, 70's and 80's that the
ml>> benefits that companies garnered by republican ideals and methods
ml>> would trickle down to their employees and thus the employees would
ml>> be taken care of by the companies... as such, the employees should
ml>> vote republican so as to not "bite the hand that feeds them"...
ml>> sadly, it is all a total crock...

RC> Blindly mandating wage levels to overcome a income level designation
 RC> wont work either.

RC> You are better off investing in education.

Well, I've got 2 bachelor's degrees (Healthcare administration and Computer
information management), CDP and A+ certifications and 30+ years of experience
