SSI is for the elderly, and some disabled, who have not been vested
in the SSDI program.  IOW, even those who have not paid a dime into
the (social security) system are eligible for SSI.  For that reason,
until 1997, SSI was regarded as welfare.

Bill Clinton promised to "end welfare as we know it".  In 1996,
Clinton and his Republican-dominated Congress ended the AFDC program,
which had helped millions of predominately young black mothers raise
their (mostly black) children.  Welfare, as re-defined, was then
limited to five years over a lifetime.  That is why the SSI program
was re-defined in 1997 as an entitlement, rather than welfare.

That was stupid, given that had you continued paying the higher tax
rate, your disability checks would have been much higher.  Especially
given the way those disability checks are calculated, the most recent
work history counting more than previous work history.

At that price, it would be cheaper for you to buy some land and build
on that property.  All you'd have to do is come up with enough for a
downpayment on some rural property, and then get a grant from Uncle Sam
to build a house/cabin/whatever.

Why do some folks complain about those who receive SSDI or SSI?
It is a deal between the individual and Uncle Sam.  As a society,
most folks are supportive of the social security program, being
that it is a social insurance program.  But some folks want to
turn it into an annuity program, which would benefit the wealthy
most of all.
