Hello Ward.

23 Dec 06 01:27, you wrote to me:

WD> That is correct ... It is not a matter of agreeing with the moderator.

Agreed. More often than not the user will not agree with the moderator
or with the moderation. That isn't what makes the user accept being moderated.
It is the moderator and how the users perceive him/her to be fair in word
and deed in the echo that makes the difference. One thing that I tried my best
to do as a moderator which made a difference for me was to avoid expressing my
personal views of users, religion, politics, Etc. in the echo that I moderated.
Of course I had my own personal views and would express them in the appropriate
places but not in the echo. In a sense as moderator it is best to not have
friends. By that I mean that a moderator needs to be perceived as treating
everyone the same.

I don't critisize or fault Felten for being frustrated or despondent as a
moderator. From what I understand in the past his attitude was much more
positive and people had a much better opinion of him. But as time passed his
outlook and demeanor changed for the worse. And so did the users view of him
as moderator. Hence the chaos that we have here today.

WD> As a matter of fact, if the feeding-systems would've said "you're out
WD> and you stay out" then there wasn't much to do about it. But as
WD> explained, a bunch of other feeds specifically invited me to link-up
WD> to said conference because they wanted to make a statement about Roy.

That was/is between you and Roy. I haven't and still don't spend much
time in that conference. Not that I have anything against the moderator. It's
just that I get more than enough chaos here. <g>

WD> I will confess that I had a lot of fun when reconnected the first
WD> message came from Roy and read somewhat along the lines of "Well, I
WD> managed to shut him out" ... Where-upon I had a lot of pleasure
 WD> replying "You think so?".

Luckily as a moderator I only had to request a few feed cuts. They
were granted. But that was years ago and the times they have changed.

WD> Roy will never confess but he shit his pants that day and he was the
WD> instant laughing-stock. It also demonstrated how powerless a moderator
WD> is when he/she does not have the respect nor the co-operation of the
 WD> distributors.

WD> These days, with all the added connectivity, I don't think it is even
WD> technically feasable to plug all the holes if one wants to shut-out a
 WD> person.

Agreed. With some of the BBS software available today echos are available
via HTTP, NNTP SMTP, Listserv's, Etc.

WD> As for Roy, he is known to respond to mails and even sends netmails to
WD> make certain I get to see his interventions. My system ignores them.

 WD> Take care,

 WD> \%/@rd
