 RC> Hello WAYNE!

 RC> 24 Dec 06 22:33, you wrote to me:

WC>> Strokes I'd think it might be advised to go seek medical
WC>> attention however in my case the indignity of being carted out of
WC>> here on a gurney did not especially appeal to me.

RC>> Once a stroke victim always a stroke victim.

 WC> I certainly hope not.

RC> Its out of hopes control.

RC> If indeed you had a stroke, then you were already in that risk group,
RC> having had one permanently elevates your risk for a future one.

Living elevates ones risk of death.
Conntinued living continues to exascerbate that threat.

RC> Not getting treatment for it was not wise.

 Perhaps.
In my case however it appears not to have influenced the outcome.
I think that may be individual case and location dependent.

Where did you attend medical school Ross?

WC> Have you ever heard of Patricia Neal the famous actress?
WC> She had a very good recovery from a rather severe stroke.
WC> You have to admire her courage.

RC> and I bet she got medical treatment.

Oh, I see you have not heard of her.
Patricia Neal was the virtual poster child for stroke awareness
in the 1960s.
She was very seriously paralysed and totally speech impaired.
She couragously worked hard and completely rehabilitated herself.
I don't believe she went into that venture thinking
"once a stroke victem always a stroke victem."

RC>> Remember I have a father who has had one, you converse with
RC>> people in this network whom have had one or more. All of them
RC>> will tell you that ignoring one wont make it go away.

WC> Mine didn't go away but the effects are fading.
WC> I think it happened in June or July but I'm not sure
WC> as I didn't think to write it down when it occurred.

RC> You should have gotten yourself into the care of medical professionals
RC> instead of worrying about what others would think of you being rolled
RC> out on a hospital gurney.

WC> I recall about your father, sharp as a tack right?

RC> Yes he is still sharp as a tack, but he got medical attention, hasnt
 RC> had another stroke since,

Does he consider himself always a stroke victem?

RC> he keeps himself sharp by doing those things
RC> that keeps his mind sharp, like working crossword puzzles, he can still
RC> walk and drive, but he is nothing like he was physically prior to the
 RC> stroke.

That's unfortunate.

RC>> Take the time to get checked out, of course this means a dietary
 RC>> change.

 WC> Did that.
WC> No salt, no alcohol and bland low fat diet I've already lost over 20
WC> pounds. Ordinary common sense stuff.

RC> and are you taking a aspirin a day?

Yes I am but was thinking that unwise as regards to stroke.
I take it rather for my arthritis.

I shouldn't drink coffee either but I do.
Tell me Ross, if I stop drinking coffee will I live forever?

WC> Outside of checking out the nurses, cable T.V. and clean sheets
WC> changed every day I can't see as how going to the hospital would have
WC> changed my recovery in any way.

RC> They would have performed a CAT scan to determine where the blockage

I do not possess a cat either upon my person or in residence.
Computer Assisted Tomography would have revealed no cat.
Of this I am certain.
If you must know and it appears you must, I am allergic to
cats.

RC> occurred and what caused the blockage, they would have administered a
RC> blood thinner such as heparin. Caught early enough, some stroke victims
RC> never experience lasting side effects.

That's good.

RC>> Your next stroke will be worse and is only a pin head size of
RC>> cholesterol or blood clot away.

WC> I know nothing of cholesterol.

RC> The bad cholesterol is what causes the plaque deposits to line the
RC> inside of your arteries, eventually what happens is one becomes fully
RC> occluded or a piece breaks off and makes its way into the brain.

You know Ross, I don't really need or desire to know all these things.
I do not partake of high cholesterol foods.

RC>> Your mental wellness wont mean squat if the physical side is
 RC>> fucked,

WC> It means rather more to me than the physical but that's me.
WC> The physical didn't terrify me, not regaining my mental status
 WC> terrified me.

RC> Being physically disabled even further than you already are, like being
RC> paraylzed on one side or another would do more to damage your mental
 RC> well being.

RC>> you already can sit up for long,

WC> I have not been able to sit for years.

RC> I fat fingered, meant to say cant, but you cant sit now and you have no
RC> paralysis, imagine it now if you have another stroke that does cause
 RC> paralysis?

If your fingers are fat perhaps a diet would be advisable?

RC> You are in a position now to seek the counsel of a Doctor to assess if
RC> what you experienced was a stroke and what course to take to minimize
 RC> future risks.

That would be at Medicare funded taxpayer expense right?

RC> You dont have a medical degree Wayne, and while neither do I, I do have
RC> a far more unique perspective on strokes, for I have a family member
 RC> whom has had one.

I think I've a unique persepective on strokes having had one.

RC> If one is to believe your accountings of this stroke and your spinal
RC> ailments, its easy to conclude that your self treatment or decisions to
RC> not get medical help is exactly why you are disabled to the degree that
 RC> you are.

Uh, Ross.
That's not what those medical board certified fellows
that do have medical degreees said about my spinal injuries.

The stroke it appears is recoverable.
Isn't that nice?

WC> Paralysis sometimes and to varying degrees.
WC> I had some but mostly transient though my right hand still requires
 WC> routine workout.

 RC>> Try typing messages?

WC> I'll give that a try next time I'm near a keyboard, thanks.

RC> This time use only one hand.

In due course should that become necessary.
I don't touch type but two finger type anyway.
You do know about the exercises to stave off carpel tunnel syndrome
don't you?

RC>> C'mon Wayne, screw your dignity, being embarassed on a gurney
 RC>> beats being dead.

 WC> Without mental capacity?
WC> Not in my book but than it didn't quite come to that did it?

RC> Next time you wont be so lucky.

Where from this foreknowledge of events not yet transpired
comes Ross?
