We have to take what you say in context to where you live. It's no secret
that Houston and surrounds has the highest crime rate in Texas due to
gangs and drugs. Gang activity isn't as bad in the rest of the state.

Usually, one doesn't get that far, as the police are quite capable of
investigating such matters to the satisfaction of the law. However, there
are many instances of shootings that are gang or drug related that get to
the DA's office.

"I was afraid for my (or insert 'my kids, wifes or family' here) life and
I shot the assailant in self defense." is all that needs to be said up
front. If you were justified in using deadly force, it won't go any
further than the police report.

Of course, this is not the same as "I was runnin' from the convenience
store with the cash I stole an' shot the dude chasin' me because I was
afraid for my life, officer, sir."
