true but there didn't need to be that distinct a seperation...

i don't see that as being part of the situation...

yeah... i suppose... but there could also have been a european backbone similar
to the one in the US or there could have been one backbone covering the entire
world where all echos were carried...

hunh? who was swept under the rug? the only "backbone wars" i'm aware of was
the initial breakup of the original backbone and the formation of a couple of
others... even then, it wasn't much of a war... especially when the gateway
systems were employed... before that, a few individual systems performed the
deed but that caused some dupes in both distribution systems and they were
easily detected...

those "wars" were causes by differing opinions, egos, and refusals to cooperate
by one or more individuals... much like the mess we recently saw in this very
echo ;)

i'd hazard a guess that no major links were changed when BJ was given the
editor position and also picked up the moderator position of this echo...
