Probably a good idea come too late. California had issued doe tags some
years ago and they don't have an over population of deer.

My former BIL will probably be among those who get a few extra doe...he's
in Illinois, who probably have the same problem there. I'll ask my
'present' BIL about it, he's an avid hunter as well.

JS> There is also the doe permit which allows a hunter to take a dear of

That was here and California too. Today it's just as easy to get a doe
permit. And that is the way it should be. One buck can have mulitple
offspring with dozens of doe, but a doe can have only one fawn per year,
unless she carries twins.

I've seen that happen in Colorado. Shoot a nice buck and he tumbles off a
cliff, out of reach. Only the scavangers will have a good meal then. I've
also had friends who've experienced what you have, when bow hunting. The
blood trail suddenly stops as the bleeding wound coagulates and the deer
keeps on moving. Somewhere they find shelter and lay down and die.

JS> Over the years I have lost the feeling that I NEED to shoot something
JS> when I am hunting. I don't mind waiting for the right shot.

I've gotten over that feeling. Sometimes it's just as nice a feeling
making your way through the woods and enjoying being with nature. So much
so that a covey of quail will set your heart to racing as they catch you
off guard when they suddenly flutter into the sky.

JS> Some days I never fire a shot at all. Not that I don't see dear that

Where I live now and in California, there isn't a deer the size of the one
I harvested in Colorado, so I gave up deer hunting. If I needed meat, I'd
take it up again, though. The deer in Texas are so plentiful and tame
because the people feed them. None I've seen ever get much bigger than a
Great Dane. I did see a nice sized buck the day we drove across I-10 to
I-35 on Highway 46. About an 8 point buck, standing behind a fence. I
could tell he was nervous. It was also hunting season about then.
