Hello Dale,

On Wednesday May 07 2008 23:40, you wrote to me:

Margins for readability fall in the same class as fonts and colours: markup.
Like other markup properties, margins should be created by the client, to be
set according to the readers preferences.

In the old DOS environmnet this was taken care of by the terminal.

MVDV>> I told you: the use of 0DH as a line separator instead of a
 MVDV>> paragraph separator.

DS> And I told you -- my messages do not have any 0x0D when they leave
DS> me. It is Maximus or Squish that inserts them. My editor does not.

Irrelevant. At some point your *system* inserts them.

MVDV>> Your software uses the carriage return as and end of line
MVDV>> indicator rather than an end of paragraph indicator.

DS> As I said -- the BBS system does that. Not the editor I am using.

Whatever. Point is that it is *your* system that inserts them.

DS> There is not much I could do about it in either case.

If you were a user on someone else's system, that may be a valid excuse. As it
is, you are the sysop of the system and therefore considered in full control of
it. That you are unable to do something about it, is a lame excuse for a
FidoNet sysop.

MVDV>>>> So an FTN complient editor has no choice but to start a new
MVDV>>>> paragraph for each line in your message.

DS> OK -- so if you or others want to consider each line as a new
 DS> paragraph, go for it.

Dale, that is the agreed upon FidoNet *standard*. 0DH marks the ens of a
paragraph. To treat it as such is not a matter of choice for FTS-0001 complient
software.

DS> The standards that I am used to have a blank line to indicate end of
 DS> paragraph.

Then you use a standard that deviates from the agreed upon FidoNet standard.
When you joined FidoNet, you agreed to use software complient with FTS-0001.

DS>> What is wrong to you with the way my system quotes messages?
 DS>> What is not fine?

MVDV>> The CRs at the end of each line. They prevent a smooth reflow
 MVDV>> when quoting.

DS> My editor reflows them smoothly without problem. Yours ought to be
DS> able to do so as well if it were smarter.

"Smart" is not a requirement for FidoNet software. FTS-0001 complience is.

Cheers, Michiel
