===================
23 May 08 21:47, Robert Bashe wrote to Roy Witt:

RB>>>> Think of the hype about Che Guevara. I sometimes wonder how long
RB>>>> it will take before bin Laden becomes idolized to the same degree
RB>>>> and American teenagers will run around with bin Laden T-shirts.

WD>>> I'm confident to say that this will never happen.

RB> Like I originaly wrote, speculation is cheap.

I know this country a lot better than you do. The days of revolutionairys
like Guevara and his ilk are long gone. The youth today may be screwed up,
but no so screwed up to follow what Guevara stood for. Times have changed
quite dramatically since you lived here. We're the same age and I see
America in whole different picture than what you've been attempting to
paint her. You can't possibly know America as well when you havn't lived
here for 40 years.

WD>>> Che lived in another time, the issues were different.

 RB> Maybe.

Even Ward recognizes the differences in Guevara's time and todays'.

RW>> Which shows how much out of touch Bob is with America today.

RB> Frankly, I have the impression I have a better grasp of the situation
RB> than you do in the middle of nowhere,

That's your first mistake. I don't live in the middle of nowhere, as you
seem to think Texas is. Perhaps West Texas resembles what you grew up in,
but certainly not in the 'hub' of what Texas really is. Austin to the
north, San Antonio to the south is not in the middle of nowhere.

 RB> relying on Wikepedia

Wikipedia is a lot more reliable than you think. The fact that anyone can
put there two cents worth in, and have it critiqued by others who have the
same knowledge, makes it more than reading an ancient dusty book that sits
on someone's book shelf. Books are one source, Wikipedia is several
sources all wrapped into one.

RB> and the Noconas News (or equivalent)

Is that the backwoods source you used as a kid. I've never heard of such a
source.

RB> for information. I can still remember how cut off I felt when I
 RB> visited the States.

Well duhhhhh. You relied on your sister or parents, which are probably as
far out of the mainstream of America as you are.

RB> . the onle real information was on the back pages of the NY Times

Ahhh, that must be where you get your liberal views. The NY Times is more
corrupt than any 500 politicians you care to compare it to. If you only
get your news there, then you're being mis-informed, badly.

RB> and everything else was local or sports "news".

So, you arrived at the game during half-time. No wonder you're so
mis-informed.

RB> I only managed to catch up on the news after I came back to Europe.

There's something to be said about one's castle. Familiar surroundings.
Being out of touch with America, it wasn't any wonder that you failed to
notice what was available to you.

RB> Hell, even CNN is provincial in the States... the international
RB> version is much better on international news.

Yeah, more liberal bs...no wonder you're so prejudiced against America
now. You should be ashamed to tell everyone you originated here.

RB> As for being out of touch, the only truth there is that I have
RB> trouble admitting to myself that the country has gone to the dogs so
RB> radically since I lived there.

You must have had such a hard time running from the dogs, you didn't
notice how much America has changed for the better. I understand.

RB> When I was a kid, nobody shot up schools,

Of course not. But we can't blame what happens at schools today on
firearms, any more than we can blame dogs for shitting on the lawn. One is
an inanimate object and the other does what it does because that's it's
nature. The influences of the internet and Hollywood on youth today is not
the influences we had as kids. Not to mention the parents who don't
control their offspring's environment like ours did.

RB> the worst drug problem was marijuana (which we heard of but
 RB> never really saw),

You must have been stuck waaaaaayyyyyy back in the sticks if you think
drugs wasn't a problem then. I lived a lot closer to the 'big' city and
know better.

RB> armed gangs didn't exist (except maybe in Harlem)

And Chicago, Los Angeles and other large cities. That was common enough
even before our day. My wife came from Albuqurque, NM and they even had
gangs there in her early youth (and that's in the middle of nowhere). I'm
sure you've heard of the Pachucos. I know I did and I lived in the middle
of nowhere in upstate Illinois in the 50s.

RB> and shootings were mostly accidents caused by people playing with
 RB> "unloaded" guns.

That's where your living in the 'middle of nowhere' came into play. There
were plenty of shootings by loaded guns too. They were't played up by the
media in those days, because the media wasn't on the anti-gun bandwagon.
It was still quite OK for citizens to have firearms back then. As I've
said before, I took mine to school and nobody ever got upset about that.

RB> Nowadays the place looks like an armed camp where one wrong word can
RB> get you knifed or shot up by some hophead so full of dope he can
 RB> barely hold a pistol.

It doesn't look any different than it did 40 years ago except for
everything is modern looking, you just notice it more because you're
living in the middle of nowhere again.

RB> If that's "freedom", you can have it with my blessings.

Thank you, I'm all for it...please stay the hell away from America...she
doens't recognize you anymore.

                R\%/itt
