Driving here is a necessity, but it's certainly not a right. Get a traffic
ticket sometime and appear in court with it. The scenario goes something
like this: The judge enters the courtroom, the bailiff says 'all rise' and
when the judge is sitting in his place, 'be seated'...then they go into a
long spiel about how much of a 'privildge' it is to have a 'state issued'
driver's license and the right to drive on 'state' owned and maintained
roads. They don't mention that your taxes pay for the roads, the
legislature who formulates and passes the traffic laws, etc.. Then, they
show a short movie on how to drive within the rules of the road and a
small part about driving while intoxicated. Then the first case is called.

Most New York City residents don't even own a car. There's little room to
drive it and no place to park it. Public transportation is much easier to
use there. Granted, if you live in other places, like Los Angeles, you
definately will need a car. There's very little public transportation
there. However, there are people who commute from out-lying areas by rail
and bus. I knew people who commuted to work in LA from San Diego by rail.
