Currently I'm looking at a flight to Los Angeles from Amsterdam, would be
around 900 Euro.
 
However when I book a Brussels to Amsterdam to LAX it costs 600 Euro about. 1/3
less for flying more. It has something to do with published direct OW/RT fares
which are applicable if a certain mileage is not bypassed for that segment.
 
Would I do the part to Amsterdam by train, then it goes way over 900 Euro ...
train costing more than plane.
 
However, if I take the plane to Amsterdam and then fly to Paris to connect to
LAX then it drops to 540 Euro ... for even flying more.
 
I know some people at airline companies and they don't bother anymore finding
out how they reach such tarrifs. I think nobody really understands it
completely.

You can do that unless if you have checked luggage, impossible to retrieve. And
since you didn't board the continuing flight, the company will cancel any
remaining flights on that ticket, so if there's a return portion then you can
forget about it.
 
If however you would cause a delay due to luggage which cannot be matched to a
particular seat and the flight being delayed because your bag needs to be
unloaded then you can be taken to court for the resulting costs to the airline.
 
The costs are possible rebookings and hotels for people missing their
connection ... and you still wouldn't get your bags.

I used to fly a lot into Great Falls MT. Only 2 flights a day by NW. They were
always full with standby. They always came to ask volunteers and offering cash,
meals and 1st class tickets.
 
People on board knew that and were just waiting for the offer, then it was a
race to beat the others to the aircraft door. People who were not on a schedule
sometimes used to book a day or two early in order to possibly snatch-up a
first class upgrade plus the $$$.
