I can't say whether it's applied before plowing or before seeding. One way or
another, shit is shit and piss is piss and both are "chemicals".

Substitute "herbicide" for "poison" and you come close. And "pesticide"
possibly during the growth period, but far enough in advance of harvest that no
residues remain on the crop. That's the way things are usually done.

Incidently, the toxicological testing that is performed on such crop protection
agents is not only directed toward determining any possible effects on crops
(residues due to improper application), but is also intended to determine if
there is any risk to the people who apply such agents, and if so, what
protective equipment (gloves, face masks) is required. The concentrated agents
are often at least slightly hazardous to health - particularly the pesticides -
but not always: still, the industry, the governments and the farmers prefer to
err on the side of caution.

P.S. It's sometimes interesting what uses such agents can have... one of the
active ingredients for pesticides used in gardens (imidocloprid) is also
effective in eliminating fleas and ticks in cats (you apply a solution to the
skin between the shoulder blades to prevent the cat from licking it off, and it
penetrates the skin and makes the cat resistant to such insects for around a
month). The only side effect is possible slight skin irritation by the
concentrated solution, although I've never seen this in my cats. Incidentally,
I've used this on my cats since around 1990, and never seen any adverse effects
- but the treatment is much more effective and pleasenter for the cat than
dusting with flea powder (which the cat can also ingest).
