As I am in the business and I sell technology items, including printers, the
ink is sold as either cartridges or tanks, not cassettes..

Cassettes could be best used to describe the ribbons used by many typewriters
and dot matrix printers.

It has long been known that printer consumables is where the printer
manufacturers derive their profits from. But they arent the only manufacturer
of any product that has a lock on this practice. Take a look around your
kitchen.

If you want a printer that will provide you with reliable printing speed,
quality and service in addition to wallet friendly page yields and cost per
page.

Terms:

Page Yields = the number of printouts per cartridge/tank.

Cost per page = amount of printouts divided into cost of ink.

A ink cartridge has the printhead built into it.

A ink tank is just a vessel to hold the ink, printing is done from a separate
printhead.


Then get the HP machines that utilize the #88 ink delivery system.

#88 ink is in the form of tanks, such machines are:

Single Function Printer:

K5400
K8600 (Wide Format up to 13 x 19

MultiFunction:

L7490
L7580
L7590
L7680
L7780

#88 ink tanks can also be had in XL form, meaning they have 2.5 to 3 times as
much ink than the std tanks.

At 5% coverage a standard black #88 can provide 600 to 900 pages. The 88XL can
do as much as 1900.

That is pretty good compared to the yields of others that nortmally range
300-600.

Cost of ink isnt bad either, A full set of 88 color tanks costs 39.99 and the
black is $18 USD.

However, what you pay in EURO for 56/57 is high compared to over here.

Want to pay less for ink over the long haul, get one of the printers I
mentioned.

Other ideas:

Set your printer driver to print in draft mode, it will stretch your ink by
using less of it for a printout, you wont tell the difference in text printing
at all.

Get a inexpensive monochrome laser printer, laser printers typically have
excellent page yields and CPP, use laser printer for the bulk of your printing
in which color isnt needed, then use inkjet for when you need color.

Ink Printers to stay away from:

Brother
Lexmark
Epson

All ink hogs and typically require you to replace ink when tank/cartridge isnt
empty.

Additionally Lexmark ink is expensive.

56/57 is the most refilled cartridge, ink refilling is a crapshoot depending on
when you refill, how long you waited to refill and how you refilled. The do it
yourself home refill kits are the least reliable. Sucking a ink cartridge dry
usually will result in a failed refill.

A proper refill is done by someone with a machine, like what we have over here
available in many drug stores and the like, in which the ink cartridge:

* Has it s circuitry tested
* Is placed in a centrifuge to force remaining ink towards printhead
* Ink is injected into it within a vacumn.

Furthermore these machines retest the circuitry after refill and also can do a
test printout.
