Ärende: The Founders' Constitution

Since I absolutely love everything about the US pre circa 1945, I surf a lot
trying to find all the wonderful writings (and speeches) by the so called
Founding Fathers -- those intellectual giants that once formed the United
States of America.

   One of my absolute favourite sites is hosted by the University of Chicago,
The Founders' Constitution. It's an absolute gold mine if you thirst for great
thoughts. The purpose of the publication (it comes in paper copy and CD ROM as
well as on line on the web) is to give a deeper understanding about what
eventually lead to the US Constitution in it's present. The URL to the site is

   It is probably not unknown that the US constitution is largely based on the
British ditto, so several articles on the above site are of British origin, but
the mere fact that they are included suggests that the Founding Fathers
actually read and tried to understand those writings.

   One such writing, that is linked to Article 1, Section 8, Clause 12; the one
that says that "The Congress shall have power [...] To raise and support
Armies..." is a big chunk of text from James Burgh's (a British Whig
politician) book Political Disquisitions. A text that the rest of the world
surely would like to make mandatory reading for all modern US politicians. The

   As I said, it's a big chunk of text, but please take your time to not only
read it but also think about what it really is trying to say! I'm fairly sure
the Founding Fathers of the US did...
