RW>> Hmmm. That may mean that in the future, we could be getting calls
RW>> from outside the country too. The NoCall list isn't enforcable
 RW>> internationally.

MvdV> Over here it is not enforceable period.

That's what international means.

MvdV> The respectable firms have all signed an agreement to observe it,
MvdV> but no one can be forced to sign. it is a free country and no one
MvdV> can be stopped from making a phone call.

They can't stop them here either, but they can give them a warning and
eventually fine them. Last resort is a suit by the individual who wants to
prove a point. Somebody rich, who has the time and the money to invest in
it.

MvdV> Yes, you may be facing internationally operating telemarketeers in
MvdV> the future. Perhaps even more than we have over here because of the
MvdV> lower language barrier. The calls I got from the US all addressed
MvdV> me in (US) English and that is not a good marketing strategy. Most
MvdV> people here speak English well enough for a telephone convesration,
MvdV> but to *sell* something you better address people in their native
MvdV> language. That will be less of a problem for marketeers targetting
 MvdV> the USA.

You would be surprised at how well some foreigners can speak American
English. I've encountered people from India and the Phillipines who spoke
perfect American dialect. By watching CCTV9 you can also see and hear
Chinese newscasters speaking perfect American English. Every once in a
while you'll catch them in a British accented word, but not very often.

RW>>>> I have a land line and have no telemarketing traffic on it.

MvdV> I get some, but the vast majority of telemarketeers does not send
MvdV> caller identification. And the usually call around dinner time. So
MvdV> my strategy is not to answer between 5 and 7 PM if there is no
MvdV> caller ID. A legitimite caller can leave a message on my answering
MvdV> machine, or just say something and I will hear it when I am around.
MvdV> Then I can still pick up. Or they can call my cell phone.

Since the only people I know who have my landline are Fidonet people,
there's no need to answer it. Thus it's on silent ring and only the
computer knows there's a call coming in. If the caller happens to be a
marketeer, they get the modem to talk to.

MvdV>>> Over here the added expense of calling a cell phone is entirely
MvdV>>> on the caller. Cell phones have numbers in a distinctive block
MvdV>>> and telemarketeers do not call them because of the added
 MvdV>>> expense.

RW>> I have three cell phones that I carry daily.

MvdV> Why do you need three cell phones? Are they that unrelaibale that
 MvdV> you need the redundancy?

No, one of them is my personal cell (I use it rather than my blackberry to
call the credit card acceptance company because it autodials the codes).

One is a Blackberry that my dispatcher sends out jobs to and the other is
a cell/radio, connected to a talk group. It's similar to a UHF repeater
operation.

I'm the manager here, so I get to bark orders and give direction over the
radio. :o)
