Keep in mind that my MIL was also a Spaniard who grew up during that era.

Adolf Hitler responded personally to Captain Langsdorff, writing the
following in his own handwriting:

"Attempt by all means to extend time in neutral waters in order to
guarantee freedom of action as long as possible. Fight your way through to
Buenos Aires, using remaining ammunition. No internment at Uruguay.
Attempt effective destruction of ship if scuttled."

The fact that the hulls were welded rather than rivoted like Britsh ships
added lightness and speed to the Spee.

But the real problem was, a shortage of fuel. Not to mention the heavy
destruction of most weapons topside.

Yeup.

Since there are several ways to leave Montevido by sea, those three ships
you mentioned had to cover all bases.

Yes, which meant that the merchants you mentioned, were ordered to leave
in 24 hour increments, thus holding Spee in port while the British played
a ruse to make Langsdorff think he was out-numbered.

 WD>  So the Brits let 2 freighters leave with near 24hr interval so Graf
 WD> Spee remained locked-up while Cumberland raced north to replace the
 WD> heavily damaged Exeter.

Those orders came before he made port in Montevido.

On another note; Captain Langsdorff committed suicide three days later by
shooting himself, in order to prove he had not acted out of fear for his
own life. He was the only crew member who didn't salute the ship with the
Nazi salute when she went down.
