========================
22 Oct 08 09:25, Robert Bashe wrote to Roy Witt:

RW>> Take a nap, Bob...you're using dates that are ten years late. Adolph
RW>> was in power by 1934, therefore, he wouldn't have been imprisoned.

RB> Absolutely right. I was confusing dates. That's what happens
RB> sometimes when you rely too much on memory.

That's ok. :o)

RW>> Everyone should use 'word' to emphasize. Quotation marks are for
RW>> quoting what someone else has written. Quoting a single word is
 RW>> hardly ever done.

RB> I've alwas used quotation marks, and seen them used in this sense, to
RB> indicate that the word was either wrongly or incorrectly used, or was
 RB> simply false.

Usually, there is another word that should be included, to clarify the
meaning. That's why they invented 'is' 'to' 'by', etc...

RB> Like: a "just" tax system. Just from whose vewpoint?

Just Tax System is an oxymoron.

RB> And what does the word mean anyway in that context?

Without the 'a' included before the word; 'just tax system' doesn't make
sense. How do I know you didn't leave out the 'a' after the word
'just'...

 RB>>>>> You're waffling.

 RW>>>> Only Belgums waffle.

RB>>> I used the American term since I thought you'd be familiar with it.

RW>> I'd prefer the German word, wasseling. Those days are shortly upon
 RW>> us here.

RB> In this sense, the German term would be "ablenken", "Du lenkst ab".

RB> What's "wasseling" anyway? Never heard the word in Germany.

My bad, I mispelled it. That's what I get for depending on memory - Bob
Bashe.

Wassailing as a practice falls into two distinct categories; the
House-Visiting wassail; very much similar to caroling, is the practice of
people going door-to-door singing Christmas carols. As one song puts
it: "Here we come a-wassailing / among the leaves so green"

In modern times it is most commonly known through reference in various
traditional Christmas carols.

In New Braunfels, TX, a very American-German community, the practice of
'wassailing' is done during one evening in December. The public is invited
to 'wassail' the many stores downtown, who in turn provide holiday
spirits. If you buy something in the store, you'll, no doubt, get an extra
glass of spirits, etc..

RB>>>>> (the Germans say "Kadavergehorsam" and mean that every order,
RB>>>>> regardless of how crazy, evil or downright criminal, MUST be
 RB>>>>> obeyed).

RW>>>> That's German thinking for you.

 RB>>> And American,

RW>> Not. An American soldier has the right to refuse an order, if the
RW>> order is against the Military Code of Conduct.

RB> Which every soldier keeps in his head even under stressful combat
 RB> situations. Sure.

A requirement. They're also obliged to carry a copy in a pocket. It is a
picket sized manual, afterall.

RB> In fact, German soldiers nowadays also have such a right, but at the
RB> time of WWII didn't. Orders were orders, and although they sometimes
RB> really were refused when particularly brutal ("shoot every third man
RB> in the village as revenge for a partisan attack", "shoot all the jews
RB> in the village"), there was often (not always) punishment - such as a
RB> transfer to the Russian front. However, there really were cases where
RB> refusal of a particularly inhuman order went unpunished and was even
RB> covered up by a superior officer. Not all German soldiers were
 RB> monsters in those days.

The superior officer was looking out for his ass as well as the soldier
who refused. If word got back to Berlin that he let that soldier off, then
his ass would be in trouble.

RW>> Many of Calley's men refused to shoot civilians because of the
 RW>> Military Code of Conduct.

RB> They did? All my admiration, then.

Like you said, not all soldiers are monsters.

RW>> I did some rather nasty things too, in my youth. But we learned from
RW>> that, which is what modern youth has to do. When my kids came to me
RW>> for advice in certain situations, I always advised them that what I
RW>> would do, isn't what they're going to do. The reason for that is,
RW>> I've been there and have done that, but you (my kids) will only have
RW>> my word for it. So, with that they took my advice and applied their
RW>> own logic and ideas to it and did what they wanted to do anyway.
RW>> Fortunately, they all had more brains than I did at that age.

 RB> ;-)

RB> Sometimes you're lucky. I am too. My son is a hard-working, steady
RB> person and I can't think of anyone I'd trust more in a tough
 RB> situation.

Unfortunately my son has some of his mother's traits, which leaves him
mentally handicapped at times. I'd say he's a better product as a human
being than I was, but he could use a bit of help in learning sterness at
times too. He's a better father than I was and my father before me. I
guess he got that from his mother and the fact that I didn't spank him as
cruelly as my father did me.
