Saddam's madcap plan of defense was quite sound, and almost worked.
Had his military men fought harder and not run away it probably would
have worked.  When it became obvious that the invasion was unstoppable,
the Iraqis resorted to guerilla warfare.  But they did not have much
success at first due to being unorganized.  But six months later they
became a force to be reckoned with, having the organizational skills
of a well-seasoned army.

Whatever WMD Saddam had it could not have amounted to much.
No stockpiles of WMD, that's for sure.

Saddam claimed one of his commanders gave the order to gas the
Kurds without his authority.  IOW, the commander acted on his own,
having had no authority from Saddam to do so.

In any event, the USA turned Saddam over to a Shiite hit squad,
which would have tried him, sentenced him, and executed him on the
same day.  But wanting to show their thanks to the Bush, the Shiites
decided to play nice and allow a kangaroo court to try Saddam, giving
Ramsey Clark all the time in the world to mount a case.  And we all
know how the rest turned out.

The man put on trial by the Shiites was a Saddam Hussein body double.
The real Saddam Hussein is living quite lavishly on some island in the
South Pacific, otherwise known as a secure undisclosed location.

And what makes anybody think the US captured Saddam?
It makes no sense for the US to have captured him in a spiderhole.
But it makes a tad bit more sense if the Kurds captured him, drugged
him, then put him in a spiderhole for safekeeping, waiting until
the Americans paid them a multimillion dollar reward for his capture.

In any event, nobody can prove it was the real Saddam Hussein
who was put on trial, sentenced, convicted, and hanged.

It was a military decision.  Of course, if Iraq had no WMD, there
was no military decision to be made.

Iraq had WMD after we sold it to them.  Military grade anthrax has
a shelf life of only six months. So it can be assumed Saddam had no
stockpiles of military grade anthrax at anytime George W. Bush was
president.  Most of the other stockpiles of WMD was destroyed under
the ausipices of UN inspection.  Whatever WMD that may have remained
in Iraq (or elsewhere) at the time George W. Bush came to power could
only have been very little.  No stockpiles of WMD, that's for sure.

For all practical purposes, the entire airspace of Iraq was under a
no-fly zone.  The US had spy satellites.  The US had military aircraft
that could fly over any and all parts of Iraq.  The US had helicopters.
The US had everything.  The Iraqis had nothing.

George W. Bush decided to invade Iraq because Iraq provided an easy
target.  He did not want to invade Iran because that would have been
far more difficult.  And there was absolutely no way George W. Bush
was going to order an invasion of North Korea.

A bully has got to pick on the little guy, never a guy his own size.
Know what I mean?
