It is known, with 99.9999% certainty, that Jefferson had at least

In principle.  Of course, the reality is far different...

What we have today is a legal mafia, which started with the original
13 colonies.  I prefer to call them the 13 original East Coast crime
families.  But hey.  What's in a name?  Anyway, all other states began
as territories.  Each and every one of those territories wanted to be
in the legal mafia, but in order to do so they had to prove their worth.
Unnerstan'?  Once a territory proved to be a "good earner" it became
a "state."  This process continued over time, the end result being
50 crime families sending their representatives to Washington, D.C.
for a big "sit down" (sometimes called a congressional session).

At the sit down the families decide how to split the money from
their rackets.  And there are a lot of rackets (the gas tax racket,
the cigarette tax racket, the alcohol tax racket, etc.).

The godfather makes sure everything runs okay.

In addition to the various crime families, the legal mafia also
has a "commission" known as the U.S. Supreme Court.  The commission
meets every so often in order to settle disputes between the rival
crime families.  That way, gang wars can be avoided.

Still not convinced the government is the legal mafia?  Remember
this: You can get in the mafia, but you can never get out.  If you
try to leave, they will kill you.  The American Civil War proves
my point.

Only those who know do not believe.

To believe, one must doubt.  Whether it is a belief in the existence
of a god(s), or a belief in the non-existence of a god(s), there is
some element of doubt (whether great or small).

"I believe in Jesus" is a statement of belief.

"I met Jesus" is a statement of nonsense, given nobody has ever
crossed the other side and returned to tell the tale.
