Ärende: "Remember the Alamo!"
=============================
10 Mar 09 11:18, Ward Dossche wrote to Robert Bashe:

RB>> WD> It is amazing that on a matter where everyone was killed so much
 RB>> WD> witness-stories exist.

RB>> Everyone _wasn't_ killed. Women and children were released, and
RB>> there are two adult male witnesses, one of which stayed until the
 RB>> last (the slave).

WD> ... neither of whom participated nor witnessed the fighting ...

Wrong...Joe, the no last name slave, was forgiven his participation
by Santa Ana because he thought Joe was forced to fight by his master.
The women were there in the church and the infirmary and witnessed the
whole thing.

RB>> WD> Doesn't it make you wonder what is truth and what is fiction.

RB>> Hard to separate, but based on historical studies the fiction part
 RB>> can be approximated.

WD> Well, the story is that Crocket fell from the wall, broke his hip or
WD> another bony-part of his body, and was taken to the infirmary ... or
WD> what was supposed to be it.

No. Crocket died at the wall with the others who were there repelling the
Mexican soldiers. Bowie died in the infirmary. He wasn't there to treat
bone fractures, he was there because he was very ill with a fever. He died
on his cot with his back to the wall with a pile of 4 or 5 Mexican
soldiers lying over him.

WD> There, the story goes, he was lying on a bed or table with 16 or 17
WD> dead Mexicans around him which he apparently all fought-off
 WD> singlehandedly ...

With his famous Bowie knife, but the first one was dead by pistol...

WD> With a broken hip? With the repeating rifle not yet available? With
WD> only cap and ball pistols? C'mon ... he may have had 1 or 2 but 16?
WD> In hand to hand? With a knife? With a broken hip? ??

No broken hip, just a fever. One pistol, a sword and finally, his knife.

 WD> C'mon...

Get your history correct first.

RB>> WD> It's a nice story, we know that at the Alamo a few insurgents
 RB>> have
RB>> WD> been killed. Crockett's heroics are fine but actually he was
 RB>> running
RB>> WD> away from an angry woman. Were they heroes or misguided
 RB>> WD> revolutionaries?

RB>> Crockett running away from a woman? Seems to me you're the one
RB>> reading fiction. Aside from that "revolutionaries" they were, ...

WD> Any story is as good as the other and Crocket did enjoy the females.

Not while fending off Mexican soldiers.

WD> What I find interesting is the delicate balance between "insurgents"
 WD> and "revolutionaries".

WD> History is written by the winners.

That battle wasn't the end of the war and this particular history was
written by the loser from notes and diaries kept by both sides.

Of course, the revolution was won by the revolutionaries.

RB>> You have to read the whole story of how things
RB>> developed to realize that the Americans in "Tejas" had become
RB>> Mexican citizens and were integrated into the society - and the
RB>> Santa Anna was no saint, but in fact a typical dictator who took
RB>> advantage of the Mexican revolution to sieze power and used it
 RB>> ruthlessly.

WD> I've read quite a lot about it, I'm not unaware that de Santa Ana was
 WD> not democratically elected.

"By 1833, he (Santa Ana) was elevated to president of Mexico in a
democratic election. He soon determined, however, that Mexico was not
ready for democracy and pronounced himself dictator."

RB>> WD> It is amazing how much dissagreement there is on what happened,
 RB>> or
 RB>> WD> didn't, at the Alamo.

RB>> It is amazing that as much information exists as does, considering
 RB>> the circumstances.

WD> That is true as well ... a lot of people around but I guess the
WD> Mexicans didn't leave much historical traceable material ... I mean
 WD> witness accounts.

On the contrary...much of the information we have today was a compiliation
of such records written by various people (officers and soldiers) in Santa
Ana's army and added to notes by the particpants and those who were in the
Alamo who survived. i.e. soldeirs wre dispatched daily towards Sam
Houston's position to the east to ask for help, many made it and recorded
what they witnessed as part of their duties.
