Here the registration of e new car is taken care of by the dealer where you buy
it.

Also taken care of by the dealer. AFAIK it has always been that way.

Since the registration stays with the car, a car owner does not normally have
to bother with changing plates.

When a plate is too damaged to be used, but still identifiable you can go to a
plate maker and submit the old one for destruction and have new one made
without much ado.

When a plate is lost or stolen, there is more red tape. First you have to go to
the police to report the loss or theft. With that report you can go to a plate
maker and have TWO temporary plates made. The temporary plates are white with
black lettering and without the blue rectangle with NL and the 12 stars of the
union. On the left edge is the expiration date. They are valid for one month.
In the meantime you apply by mail for a new registration. This take some time.
You then get a new set of papers, but the registration stays the same, but
added is a "replacement "code". When you have the papers you can go to the
plate maker for a second time and have e new set of plates made. If only one
plate was lost or stolen you have to submit the remaining old plate

The new plates have the replacement code stamped above the first dash.

The  plate shown has replecement code 2, so it is the second time it was
replaced.

Gründlich. No doubt. ;-)

But the system here is pretty thorough as well. Before 2000 with the old plates
without the blue EU logo one could have any number of plates made. Now the
system ensures that you can only have two yellow plates for a car and one for a
motorbike or trailer over 750kg.

For light trailers (<750 kg) who have no registration of their own and for bike
racks etc, there are white repeater plates. Those you can have made in any
quantity, but you better be sure that it matches the yellow plates of the prime
mover when you hit the road...


For a change of ownership you go to the post office. The registration papers
consists of two parts. Part 1 documents the vehicle. make, Type weight, colour,
chassis serioal nr, etc. Part 2 documents the owner. With a change of
ownership, a new part 2 is issued. This happens while you wait, they just
contact the registration site and print it out on-line. No new plates.
