Ärende: caliber v mm
====================
-> On 28 Apr 07 11:26:34, Joe Bruchis got back to Dan Ceppa
-> Re: caliber v mm

DC> decimal point is rarely used verbally. But, a 45 caliber
DC> pistol is actually .45 caliber.

JB> I realize that. The answer actually came out to .3545

No, that's just different measurements for the basic concept.

DC> If you divide inches by inches you get pure numbers. IOW, 2in/1in = 2
DC> , 2 only. It does not equal 2 caliber nor even 200 caliber for that
DC> matter. As I wrote, "caliber" is only the description of what is
DC> being measured. It is not a measurement of size of any type. Even
DC> in large guns on battleships, it's a pure number ratio.

JB> I'll look into a little more. I think you or whoever was right the
JB> first time. A caliber is the diameter of the bore of a gun in inches.

But, it doesn't have to be in inches. Any unit of length would
do, including furlongs. However, mm and inches happen to be a lot
more convenient to use and visualize.

JB> So, all I'm asking is to convert mm's to inches so the metric
JB> measurement can be expressed as caliber.

1 in = 25.4 mm

.35 cal to mm

do it this way:

.35 in x 25.4 mm
-----------------
     1 in

the "in" cancel out and you are left with

.35 x 25.4 mm
----------------- or more simply .35 x 25.4mm wich eqauls 8.89mm
     1

DC>> The caliber of a 9mm pistol is (what else?) 9mm
JB> See what I mean? Your statement here is missing my question above.

DC> Calibers are not really a measurement as such. It is a description
DC> of what is being measured, ng the diameter of the bore of the gun
DC> barrel. The units measuring can be any unit of length. Like it or
DC> not, my use of 9mm as the caliber of a gun is 100%.

JB> I don't think so. Caliber is a measurement expressed in inches. It's

Nope, caliber is only the description of what is being measured.
A caliber has no length, diameter or anything, It is simply the
fact that there is a hole in the center of the axial shaft of
an elongated object.

JB> the diameter of the bore of a gun (a measurement). If it can be
JB> expressed in inches, it definitely can be expressed in mm but must be
JB> converted from inches to mm's.

Nope again. It can be bored in mm just as easily as it can in inches or
fractions of a light year.

DC> Would you care to bet on it? How much do you want to lose?

 JB> I don't want to bet,

Good move!

 JB> I'm just curious.

You'll get there once you realize that caliber does not have
a stated size. It is a concept describing what is being measured.

Try this: How big is a hard drive?

If you are talking dimensions, most hard drives today are pretty
much the same in size for desktops.

Now, how about capacity?

Equate "platters" to "caliber".

If I gave you one of 2 identically sized HDs how would you know one is
is bigger?

Every HD has at least one platter and a set of heads. Most have more.
Yet, the cases they come in are often the exact same size, especially
if the mfg is the same.

In general, a HD with 2 platters would be twice as large as one
with 1 platter. You determine that by measuring, ng counting,
the platters.

Now, back to guns: To determine which gun is deadlier (again,
in general) you count, in this case measure, the diameter
of the bore. The larger the bore the deadlier the gun.

If the above doesn't work for you, well use what a medical dose is...
