CS> Grin, sorry mistaken impression given there. There are
CS> 17 candidates, it's just
CS> that you hear 'more' on Hilary thn the others.
PK> So I wasn't far from the mark, it seems visibility is
PK> related to "popularity" (in other words "what the press
PK> thinks"), IE if the press can make news from you, you
PK> become more popular... The frightening thing about that is
PK> that news makes news, makes popularity, or the American
PK> population get told whats "good for them"......;-(
Naw, most of us are just laughing at this stage. The most notable one this
week
took off on a roadie trip with Oprah whick makes him newsworthy,
CS> Biden and Guliani are the other
CS> 2 you hear of fairly often but not as often.
PK> Oddly enough, the news we see here seems to list those 2
PK> about on a par (from a news worthyness perspective) with
PK> Clinton, perhaps even slightly ahead, but I can't tell if
PK> its perhaps slightly more "toungue in cheek", if you now
PK> what I mean....;-)
Actually it could be both are serious contenders. I seriously doubt Hilary is.
Although it is very possible we would elect a serious female contender (country
ready for the idea at last) she scares most of us silly. She's a backroom
politics conniving bitch who lets her ethics give way to expediency and has
problems with being honest. Although she may have a clue, she uses a baseball
bat on anyone who gets in her way. I think we've had enough leaders like that
in series don't you?
It would be funny though to see her hubby be 'first gentleman' and have to toe
the line to her tune. If it werent so serious, I'd vote for her just to see
that!
Americans have been rather stodgy about women in office for longer than most
lands so the result is while someplace in the next 15 years there will be some
serious female contenders with the *experience* to back it up, most of them
lag in the experience being just now in the positions to gain it. They have to
'season' in those jobs, the same as a man has to, to be reputable for the job.
PK> It's too
CS> early for the series to
CS> have really ramped up and having 17 candidates, isnt
CS> all that uncommon at this
CS> stage for USA.
PK> We rarely get to hear about more than the 4-5 leading candidates, but
PK> what is visible to us is the effect those candidates might have on
PK> the rest of the world, from comments they make about (or
PK> "from inside") the USA. Its kinda wierd because there is
PK> bugger all we can do about it, but there still seems to be
PK> some wierd sort of interest in whats going on...
Grin, well, I've seen as many as 27 one time, but 12-20 is the norm I think.
Give it a few months and it will filter down to 4-5 then down to 2 main ones.
It's related to who can get others to work with them, and any candidate who
can't get their own party behind them, may not be able to run a country as
wierdly eclectic as this one.
Here's an odd one. We've had Mormons (a religion) run before but the religion
was never an issue. Seems with a recent one it is being made one?
I do like the fact that several of the more creditable candidates are African
American and one of the creditable ones is hispanic. It's about damn time!
CS> What I find intriging is a growing support for changing
CS> the law so that next
CS> time (election after this one) someone like Arnold
CS> Swartznegger can run. At
CS> this time, he is not eligible as he was born overseas.
PK> Yes, we have seen something like that mentioned, although I must
PK> admit, I can't see it happening to soon, as its a radical departure
PK> from the status quo.
It can happen pretty fast believe it or not. It's come up before that the
restriction is hard to support in the constitution except for that byline that
makes it supported.
CS> I wonder what the world would think, if we elected 'The Terminator' as
CS> President? He is doing a really good job in California
Can you see the reaction if he joked about 'being back'? he'd do it too <g>
CS> as Gov. A few bobbles
CS> but overall a well done job. Most noticable was in the
CS> recent fires this past
CS> fall. Although fires are common out there, at the
CS> Santa Anna season, this
CS> year was particularily bad. Folks are comparing his
CS> proactive stance with
CS> the Katrina mess and overall opinion of Arnold is rising fast.
PK> From an outsiders perspective, allowing Arnold to stand for Pres would
PK> be nothing short of extremely radical. The usual impression we
Why? I mean, why would you feel it so?
PK> see of this sort of thing is that its just a candidates
PK> exercise to "get more votes for re-election", but in
PK> Arnolds case he successfully seems to demonstrate that he
PK> really cares, and its not all just show. Perhaps it is
PK> BECAUSE he is an "outsider", that he is allowed to act in a
PK> different manner to those prior to him...
No actually hes doing the same as many another great state governer and they
generally have pretty good luck in presidential elections if past Governors
with a good record. Regan was CA gov too.
PK> I found your comments from Japan to be an extremely
PK> refreshing viewpoint, please retain that openess.
CS> Not a problem! I'm not mono-cultural <g>. I was once,
CS> but I got over it. I
CS> think most USA folks would object to being called
CS> 'mono-cultural' but the
CS> majority are even though unaware of it.
PK>
PK> Ack to all that. Experience working WITH Americans at work
PK> has revealed that you NEVER tell them what they are doing
PK> wrong, just suggest possible ways of improving the result
PK> by changing xxx. In an ironic way its sort of like the
PK> "Saving Face" approach of the Japanese...;-)
Just a different approach to it. Possibly true but i never thought of it that
way. Humm. Unlesws i already have a friendly relationship with someone, if
they just baldly told me' thats wrong, do it this way' I'd probably feel hurt
and angry at the same time. That would then make me 'defensive'. if however
approached with 'here is a diffrent way, see if it works' I'd glommer on it
and try.
In Japan I had to learn that the folks really hate to say 'no, cant help' so
will send you on tail-chasing epics that are comical in retrospect as you
ricochet from one side of town to the other. They do not mean bad, they figure
if they do not have the answer, perhaps another might. Even if they kinda know
you are asking for something not possible there <g>.
From my limited experience, OZ folks are more 'direct' in approach and it's
refreshing to me. Not rude your folks, just direct. An OZ person would say
No, I dont think you can do that here, but if you want to try, heres my best
guess on who to try'. An American would vary between 'nope, cant' and 'nope,
but call here and see if they can help'.
CS> Kinda like 'Kiwi' is a reference unless used in a negative manner.
PK> In 1997 I spent 2 months in Sydney working on a project with 90 people
PK> from all over the world. I learnt a lot about different cultures
PK> during that exercise, however it was hard to descrive to
PK> most of them that I did not object to being called "a
PK> flightless bird" (a Kiwi), I actually said to them that the
PK> term "Kiwi" was "a term of endearment". That stunned most
PK> of them, but I think it got the message through. Such names
PK> are far from an insult (to us), it is somethig UNIQUE to
PK> our part of the world. However I can't see a North American
PK> being called "Mr Bald Eagle" and it not being taken as an
PK> insult.....;-)
Hehe different reference. If you called one of us USA types a 'yank' we'd
generally be quite happy if used as a non-insult.
I recall one fellow in Darwin who called me 'The lady Yank' each trip back (was
there 5-6 trips) then he'd ply me with beer to watch my accent go south the
mason-dixon and have a hootin' good time jus' a listenin'.
CS> Grin, wanna really irk folks? Pretend Z1 is just USA.
CS> The Canadians will be all over your ass <g>.
PK> I can't offend the Canadians, I have cousins over there....;-)
Hehe.
CS> BTW, did you know Z6 has checked in? Yijun Fan
CS> (Lawrence) via Z3 numbers off
CS> net 800.
PK> Yes I saw that, however nothing has appeared in the Z3 Sysop Echo
PK> yet...
Dunno if he linked to it. Ask 3:800/0 if he has?
